Missouri State Snaps Shockers Streak

1/21/2011 10:49:00 PM

Springfield, Mo. - Missouri State put an end to Wichita State's four-game winning streak in the head-to-head series with a 71-41 victory over the Shockers at JQH Arena Friday night.  BreAnna Dawkins led the Shockers with 10 points.

WSU had won eight of the last 10 meetings, including all three match-ups last year.  The victory for Missouri State keeps them tied atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings.

The Shockers scored the first four points of the game to initiate a tug-of-war first 18-and-one-half minutes.  At that point, the Shockers trailed just 24-23.  However, Missouri State scored six points over the final minute of first half then held WSU scoreless until the 13:13 mark of the second half.  The Shockers trailed 47-25 but could never manage a comeback.

Casey Garrison poured in 22 points for Missouri State, despite shooting 1-for-9 in the first half.  Christiana Shorter added a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds.  Tia Mays blocked seven shots.

Jazimen Gordon pulled down nine rebounds to pace the Shockers.  Jessica Diamond pitched in nine points and four assists.

Wichita State (9-9, 3-4 MVC) returns to the road next week with games Thursday at Drake and Saturday at Creighton.
