Springfield, Mo. - Missouri State put an end to Wichita
State's four-game winning streak in the head-to-head series with a 71-41
victory over the Shockers at JQH Arena Friday night. BreAnna Dawkins led the Shockers with 10
points.
WSU had won eight of the last 10 meetings, including all
three match-ups last year. The victory
for Missouri State keeps them tied atop the Missouri Valley Conference
standings.
The Shockers scored the first four points of the game to
initiate a tug-of-war first 18-and-one-half minutes. At that point, the Shockers trailed just
24-23. However, Missouri State scored
six points over the final minute of first half then held WSU scoreless until
the 13:13 mark of the second half. The
Shockers trailed 47-25 but could never manage a comeback.
Casey Garrison poured in 22 points for Missouri State,
despite shooting 1-for-9 in the first half.
Christiana Shorter added a double-double with 21 points and 14
rebounds. Tia Mays blocked seven shots.
Jazimen Gordon pulled down nine rebounds to pace the
Shockers. Jessica Diamond pitched in
nine points and four assists.
Wichita State (9-9, 3-4 MVC) returns to the road next week
with games Thursday at Drake and Saturday at Creighton.
