Box Score WICHITA - The Wichita State
Shockers defeated the Indiana State Sycamores 3-0, Saturday in front of 2,169
fans at Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers took the Missouri Valley
Conference match with scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-16. Wichita State
improved to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the Valley.
Sophomore outside hitter Emily Adney and junior outside hitter Camri Zweisler
led the Shockers with nine kills each. Junior setter Mary Elizabeth
Hooper led all players with 28 assists and junior libero Sarah Waldorf added 15
digs.
Indiana State's Stacy Qualizza led all players with 10 kills. Kiya James
led the Sycamores with 9 digs and Shelbi Fouty had a team-high 26
assists.
In the first set, the Shockers got their first three points from Emily Adney on
two kills and a service ace. Another three straight points from Adney
pushed their lead to 12-7 and two straight kills by Amanda Backes made it
14-7. A kill by Zweisler pushed their lead to 21-13, the Shockers largest
margin in the set. The Sycamores cut the deficit to 21-17 on an attack
error by Sarah McGee. Back to back blocks by Hooper made it 24-17 and an error
by Indiana State gave the Shockers set one, 25-17.
A kill by McGee pushed the Shockers lead to 6-3 in the second set. A
double hit by Indiana State made the score 10-5 and a kill by Adney made it
11-5 and forced a timeout by Indiana State. Out of the timeout, the
Shockers took a 15-5 lead on a kill by Amanda Backes. A kill by Katie
Vogts gave the Shockers their largest lead 18-6. Indiana State cut the
lead to 22-15 but a kill by Ashley Andrade gave the Shockers a 23-14
lead. Zweisler pushed the lead to 24-15 with a kill and Alysa Heath gave
the Shockers the second set win with a kill, 25-15.
The Shockers took a 5-3 lead in the third set. Indiana State came back to
a 5-5 tie but the Shockers responded with five straight points, the last on a
block by Hooper and McGee to take a 10-5 lead. An attack error by McGee
cut the Shockers lead to 19-14 but Zweisler followed with a kill to force
Indian State to take their second timeout in the set. A kill by Hooper
followed the timeout to make it 21-14. Senior Lindsey Eckendrode saw her
first action of the season after missing last season with a knee injury and
scored a kill to make it 23-14. A block by Eckenrode and Chelsey Feekin
gave the Shockers the match 25-16.
The Shockers return to action Saturday, October 2nd at Missouri
State. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
