Kan. - The Wichita State Shockers defeated Illinois State, 3-2, Friday in front
of a crowd of 2,267 at Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State won the Missouri
Valley Conference match with scores of, 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 26-28 and 15-9.
Junior
outside hitter Camri Zwiesler led Wichita State with 17 kills as the Shockers
improved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Junior setter Mary
Elizabeth Hooper led all players with 54 assists. Junior libero Sarah Waldorf
compiled 25 digs.
Illinois
State's Shannon McGlaughlin led all players with 21 kills for and added 21 digs
as the Redbirds ended a three-match winning streak. Kristin Stauter had 50
assists for the Redbirds, who fell to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in Valley play.
In
the first set, the Shockers built up a 10-5 lead, ending an extended rally with
an Illinois State attack error and block by Shocker Hooper. An Illinois State attack
error pushed Wichita State to a 12-6 lead midway through the opening set. The Redbirds cut the Shockers' lead to
14-12 later in the set with three-straight points. A kill from Emily Adney,
followed by a service ace from Adney, pushed Wichita State to a 22-18 lead -
the Shockers' largest since a 14-10 margin. The Shockers went on to post four-straight points during that
stretch. A kill from Zwiesler pushed Wichita State to a 25-19 win.
The
Shockers built up a 5-1 lead to open the second set. A block from senior Sarah McGee
and Hooper extended Wichita State to an 8-3 lead. A kill from Zwiesler, who
went on to compile seven kills in the set, gave the Shockers a 10-5 lead. A
kill from Backes and a block from Hooper and Adney created an 18-14 margin. A
kill from the Redbirds' Mallory Leggett pushed Illinois State to within two
points of the Shockers, 22-20. A Wichita State attack error from Backes brought
the Redbirds to within one point, 23-22, but the Shockers closed out the set
with a kill from Backes and a block from Hooper for a 25-22 win.
The
Redbirds started strong in the third set, building up a 7-2 lead, forcing the
Shockers to use a timeout. The Shockers responded with three-straight points,
including a kill from McGee and block from McGee and Hooper to cut the Redbird
lead to two points. A kill from Wichita State's McGee cut Illinois State's lead
to 9-6, which was the closest margin for the Shockers until later in the set
when kills from Zwiesler, McGee and Backes brought Wichita State to within
three points, 17-14. An Illinois
State block from Stauter and Hailey Kelley closed out the third set, giving the
Redbirds a 25-19 edge.
The
teams traded leads and ties in the fourth set until the Shockers' Adney put
together back-to-back kills for a 7-5 lead - the largest lead for either team
early in the set. The score knotted again 9-9 before a kill from McGee and
block from Elizabeth Field and Zwiesler gave the Shockers an 11-9 edge. The
Redbirds later took the lead 14-13 on an attack error from Backes. The Redbirds
built up a 17-14 edge before the Shockers battled back to tie the score, 17-17,
on a kill from McGee. Wichita State later trailed by one point before a kill
and block from Ashley Andrade gave the Shockers a 23-22 edge. In the closing
minutes of the match, the teams once again traded leads and ties before Illinois
State won 28-26 on an attack error by Adney.
In
the fifth and final set, the Redbirds jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the
Shockers responded with five-straight points for a 5-3 edge. Wichita State put
together a 12-8 lead, capped with kills from Backes and Field. An attack error
from Redbird Kelley, followed by a block from Shockers Field and Adney gave
Wichita State a 14-8 lead. A kill
from Illinois State's McGlaughlin cut the Shockers' lead to five. A kill from
Adney sealed a 15-9 Shockers' win.
The
Shockers return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday against Indiana State at Charles
Koch Arena.
