Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State junior Camri Zwiesler and
sophomore Emily Adney paced the Shockers with 13 kills each in a 3-0 sweep
against SMU Tuesday night at Charles Koch Arena. WSU won, 25-15, 25-18 and
25-19.
The Shockers improved to 7-2 on the season in front of a home
crowd of 2,203, winning their fourth match in a row. Wichita State junior Mary
Elizabeth Hooper led all players with 35 assists. Junior Sarah Waldorf, the
Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week, paced all players with
15 digs. Zwiesler added 11 digs. SMU's record fell to 7-3 overall.
After back-and-forth action at the beginning of set one, the
Shockers took control of the set scoring nine-straight points and taking a 14-6
lead with two kills from Amanda Backes and a kill apiece from Zwiesler and Adney. SMU stopped the run with a WSU service
error and kill from Kathryn Wilkerson. The Shocks went up 20-13 after three
kills from Zwiesler and one from Sarah McGee. SMU answered right back with another kill from Wilkerson,
but the Shocks never looked back with a kill from Adney and a block assist from
Elizabeth Field and Adney.
Zwiesler wrapped up set one's action with another kill to take a 25-15
victory.
The Shockers jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in set two
after back-to-back kills by Zwiesler and a service ace by Field. The Shocks increased their lead to 9-2
after another kill from Zwiesler, two service aces from Backes, and a kill from
McGee. SMU was able to stop the bleeding with a kill from Jessica Oliver. Zwiesler answered right back with a
kill to put the Shocks ahead 11-4. SMU shortened the lead to 11-8 with three
successful kills from Dana Powell, Courtney Manning, and Wilkerson. After back-and-forth kills from Adney
and SMU's Powell, the Shockers took control of the game taking a 20-13 lead
with three kills from Backes and a service ace from Jackie Church. The Shocks wrapped up the set with a
solo block from Hooper going ahead 25-18.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in set three
after two kills from Manning and an error by WSU. Two kills from Adney and a block assist from Backes and
Fields helped the Shocks even things up at 6-6. SMU took a 12-9 lead after kills from Jessica Oliver and
Caitlin Adair, but a Hooper service ace and a kill from Adney evened the score
at 14-14. The Shocks never looked
back after a Zwiesler kill put them ahead 21-17. A block assist from McGee and Hooper gave the Shockers a
25-18 win in set three.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 17 when they
open Missouri Valley Conference play at Bradley at 7 p.m.
