Box Score PROVO, Utah - Wichita State won the BYU Invitational by
beating host BYU in four sets. The
Shockers (6-2) won by scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-21.
Sarah Waldorf had a career-high 36 digs, while Mary
Elizabeth Hooper had 50 assists. Tournament
MVP Camri Zwiesler totaled 18 kills and 14 digs, while all-tournament selection
Emily Adney had 14 kills and Sarah McGee added 10.
Back-to-back Shocker blocks gave WSU an early 9-6 lead in
the first set before BYU used two Shocker errors and a kill to go in front
11-10. The Shockers answered with
five-straight points to take a 15-11 lead and increased it to 19-14 on a kill
from Sarah McGee. The Cougars scored
four-straight after that to make the score 19-18, but the Shockers answered
with back-to-back kills from Emily Adney and went on to win 25-19 on a kill by
Mary Elizabeth Hooper.
The second set went back-and-forth until the Shockers scored
four-straight to go in front 15-11.
Three kills from Camri Zwiesler increased the lead to 18-13, but BYU
ended the set on a 12-4 run to win the second set 25-22.
The two teams traded points throughout the early portion of
the third set until kills by Amanda Backes and Hooper put WSU in front
17-14. BYU cut the lead to 17-16 with a
couple of kills, but would get no closer than one the rest of the way as WSU
held on to win 25-21.
Back-to-back Zwiesler kills gave WSU a 13-9 lead in the
fourth set, before BYU cut it to 14-13.
A kill by Backes increased the lead to 19-14, but BYU again answered by
pulling within 22-20. Kills by Zwiesler,
Adney and McGee helped close out the set 25-21.
The Shockers are next in action on Tue., Sept. 14 when they
host SMU at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
