Wichita State Head Coach Gene Stephenson opening statement:“I thought it was a great performance by
Tim Kelley, tonight. We did get some key hits early that helped us. Their pitcher Lloyd took us off balance for four or five innings. I don't think we got a hit in the 5th or 9th inning; we weren't very patient. I thought they pitched very well. I was very thankful that Tim was on his game tonight; which was needed because they're a very good offensive team. We were able to get some key hits first, so that was great.”
Wichita State Junior pitcher Tim Kelley on pitching performance:“Coach said, 'Can you get one more guy?' I said, 'Yeah.' At that point I was getting worn out, but he was going to have to yank me out. Just one more guy and that was it.”
Wichita State Freshman first-base Johnny Coy on homerun:“It was the first pitch fastball. It wasn't all that fast, so I kind of had to wait back on it. I am not sure if it reached 21st Street. Oh, it did?”
Evansville Head Coach Wes Carroll opening statement:“Obviously, we didn't get the starting pitching we needed the first couple of innings. We kind of dug ourselves a hole.
Tim Kelley, tonight, was throwing about 80% sliders and our hitters couldn't make an adjustment throughout the entire game. The results ended in strikeouts.
Tim Kelley threw a great ball game, tonight. As you go through the tournament, in the third or fourth inning offense has to step up. I have a lot of confidence in our offense to get us a chance tomorrow, 12:30 p.m. against Missouri State. Hopefully, we are still alive after that game. Our offense has got to step up and make that adjustment.”
Evansville Junior infielder Cody Fick on facing Tim Kelley's pitching:“He only threw me one fastball, the first of the ballgame. Like Coach said, he threw 80% sliders. I failed to make the adjustment, like a lot of other guys. When you start throwing that much off speed, you got to scale your swing back and just try to put the ball in play. We didn't do that. You have to tip your cap to Tim; he did a phenomenal job.”
