Missouri State Head
Coach Keith Guttin on the Bears' win:
"It was a survival game. We found a way and strung some
things together there. We tried to be really patient with (SIU starter Jimmy)
Cornell. We just faced him on Saturday and he'll make you chase so I thought we
did a decent job there. Obviously hit well with men on base, which has been a
problem for us and we had to bring in our closer (Grant Gordon) pretty early,
but again it was survival. He's been outstanding all year."
Missouri State third
baseman Curt Courtwright on the 11-run inning:
"I was preaching base hits, don't try to do to much and get
guys on base. We started stringing it together and getting guys on base then
Keenen Maddox stepped up big time and hit that grand slam. I knew that once he
did that then we had a chance to do it. It just shows that every hit counts."
Missouri State
outfielder Keenen Maddox on his grand slam:
"He threw me a slider and messed up. He made a mistake and
left it up. I knew what I had to do with it."
Southern Illinois
Head Coach Dan Callahan on the game:
"I think our season ended basically how it started with us
having problems in the bullpen. We had a stretch in the middle of the year
where we thought we had kind of solidified things with our set-up guy, but
lately we've had problems piecing it together between our starters and Lee
Weld. Grant Gordon did enough to keep us off-balance. We tried to piece
together the sixth inning with four different pitchers and couldn't get it
done. Then it turned out that the sixth inning was our downfall."
Southern Illinois
pitcher Ryan Bradley on the sixth inning:
"I wasn't sharp at all throughout the whole inning, and then
it just spiraled out of control and I couldn't stop it. I had a lot of command
trouble with my fastball."
