Indiana State Wins Tournament Opener, 8-7, in 10 innings

Game 1 of State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament

WICHITA, Kan. --  After an hour rain delay Tuesday morning, the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament got underway with No. 3 seed Indiana State taking an 8-7 win from No. 6 seed Creighton in 10 innings on a Ben Ferrell walk-off single that scored Kyle Graham.

CU broke up the 1-1 tie with a four-run second to take a 5-1 lead on five hits, two which came on Adams' single that scored Knight and Staehely.

ISU then scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to close the gap 5-3, and after a scoreless fifth inning, a Staehely two-out solo home run in the sixth made it 6-3 Bluejays.

ISU's Jeremy Lucas led off the Sycamore sixth with a single, moved to third on a hit-and-run by Tyler Graham and scored on Levi Furgeson's double to the left field wall.

With runners at second and third, Creighton went to the bullpen for Matt Patterson. Patterson's balk to the first batter he faced allowed the runners to move up and let ISU again close the gap, 6-5. ISU continued to apply pressure in the inning as Grant Grgurich walked to put runners at the corners before the first out of the inning.

The Sycamores tied it when Strausborger reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Ferguson.  ISU took the lead, 7-6, when Grgurich scored on a bunt single by Kyle Burnam.

Creighton catcher Carson Vitale threw out Strausborger at third on an attempted double-steal for the second out of the inning.

Patterson then hit Fieser, before CU made its second pitching change of the inning in favor of Bobby Lackovic, who got Robby Ort to ground out to first to end the inning.

ISU starter Jacob Petricka retired the side in the seventh with two strikeouts and a groundout. In the bottom of the frame, ISU couldn't capitalize on a one-out single by Graham as a strikeout by Ferguson and a ground-out by Grgurich left Graham stranded at second after a stolen base.

Creighton tied the game at 7-7 after loading the bases in the top of the eighth, but could only pick up a run on Staehely sac fly that scored Vitale.

CU's Mark Winkelman came in relief in the bottom of the eighth, and got Ferrell to fly out. Strausborger and Burnam grounded out to end the inning.

Scott Harlan took the mound for ISU in the top of the ninth and retired the side with three-straight strikeouts.

Winkelman then retired the side to force extra innings with two groundouts and a fly out to left field.

After a groundout by CU's Swift,  Vitale reached on a single to left field before Scott Thornburg hit into the double play to end the top half of the 10th.

In the bottom half of the 10th, Graham singled through the left side, advanced to second on Fergeson's sac bunt and to third on Pearsons hard hit that went through Wikelman's glove. Ferrel followed with the walk-off single to right for the game-winning RBI.

ISU's Scott Harlan (4-3) picked up the win with the loss going to CU's Winkelman (2-3). ISU starter JAcob Petricka went eight innings, striking out 10 and surrendering nine hits.

Indiana State improved to 34-17 overall and advances to play the winner of the No. 2 Illinois State versus No. 7 Bradley game at 4 p.m., tomorrow. Creighton, 26-24,  plays the loser of the No. 2 Illinois State versus No. 7 Bradley game tomorrow at 9 a.m.
