Indiana State v. Creighton - Quotes

Indiana State Head Coach Rick Heller opening statement:
“It was a great college baseball game and we knew when we drew Creighton that it was going to be that way. It's always a battle when we play each other. It was a game where both of the starting pitchers kind of made their own trouble early, and then both of them settled in and worked out of it. I was really proud of Jake (Petricka), in the second inning he had a couple of walks that hurt and then three ground balls that went through. They didn't really hit him hard, but were able to chalk up some runs to get them the early lead. I was really happy that he settled in, threw some zeros up after that and logged some innings for us. It would've really been tough on us if we would've had to go to the bullpen early, but Jake really toughened up and was able to get it done for us. It was really a great team win after falling behind and fighting back. I thought our guys really focused after the rain delay. It's not an easy thing to get up at 5:30 a.m. and go take batting practice and try and get ready to play. It really takes us out of our routine so I was really proud of our guys for playing well through that.”

Indiana State Senior shortstop Ben Ferrell on playing on Eck Stadium's new turf:
“In the second inning, I took two steps to my right after the first one and then another two steps and I still couldn't get to the last one. It does play a lot faster.”

Indiana State Junior pitcher Jacob Petricka on his start:
“I got behind early with the hitters. They were hitting on 2-0 counts, 2-1 counts and they weren't even squaring up, I was pretty much telling them what's coming. I mean, if it's a 2-0 count I pretty much have to throw them a fastball. They found the holes and did damage, then later on I was able to get ahead so it was more of a guessing game for them. ”

Heller after coming back from a 5-1 deficit:
“Today was a complete team game. We played as a team the whole way. That's one of the things we've been talking about, is getting back to just having fun and playing as a team. Every game we've played this year we've been in it so we have the confidence of knowing we can come back from anything. Today, we were able to stick it out and keep getting back in the game and we did that.”

Creighton Head Coach Ed Servais opening statement:
“I want to congratulate Indiana State. They played well. It's tough to come back after getting down 5-1, but I give them a lot of credit for coming back in that situation. We had a lot of momentum early on, but they hung in there and they responded and they battled back with a big inning themselves and then won it in the bottom of the tenth.”

Servais on hitting off of Petricka:
“That should be enough to win. Seven runs has got to be enough to win. If you would've told me last night that we would've scored that many off of that kid and what he has, I would've taken it. Our team is built around scoring five or six runs and then keeping you out of position from then on and we just didn't do that today.”
