Homers Key Shocker Win on Senior Day

5/2/2010 2:54:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan.- Senior Kara L'Huillier's solo home run in the sixth completed a comeback effort and gave Wichita State (20-28, 9-12) a 3-2 win over Bradley (15-31, 5-18) to complete the series sweep on Sunday, Senior Day, at Wilkins Stadium.

The Braves jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on Jacqueline Vitale's two-run homer to right field in the top of the first. Taylor Cox led off the game with a walk, setting up Vitale's second homer of the season.

WSU would answer in the bottom half of the inning, as Kiersten Dixon cut the BU lead in half with a two-out solo home run to left-center. Dixon's fourth homer of the season gave the Shockers a total of eight two-out RBI in the three game series.

After giving up the homer to Vitale in the first, Shocker pitcher Kasha Kolb settled down and retired six straight BU batters. With the defense playing well behind her, Kolb did not allow a runner to reach third base the entire game.

Jamie Hull tied Heather Gerritse for the team lead in home runs with her sixth of the season to lead off the second inning and tie the game, 2-2.

The Shockers had a chance to blow the game open in the fourth after they loaded the bases with no outs but couldn't manage a run. Hull led off the inning with a double which chased BU pitcher Brandi Ore from the game. Reliever Amanda Clack walked Coleman and Sammie Shook before being pulled in favor of Katie Dennis.

Danika Miller popped up to shallow left field where Cox made the catch and caught Coleman straying too far from the bag at second for a double play. Dennis escaped the inning when Mitts lined out to Jackie Roth at third to keep the 2-2 tie.

After getting ahead in the count, 2-1, against Dennis to lead off the sixth, L'Huillier crushed her second home run of the season to give WSU the 3-2 lead.

Kolb retired the Braves in order in the top of the seventh for her fourth win of the week and third in the series. She improved to 14-16 on the season and totaled 24 strikeouts against the Braves.

The win gave WSU its first three-game sweep of BU since 2007 when the Shockers took all three games in Peoria, Ill.

WSU will look to keep the momentum going next weekend, May 8-9, as it travels to Terre Haute, Ind., for a three-game series against Indiana State. First pitch of Saturday's first game will be at 11 a.m., central time.
