WICHITA, Kan.- Lauren Coleman went 4 for 6 with two homers and five RBI on Saturday to help Wichita State (19-28, 8-12) sweep a doubleheader from Bradley (15-30, 5-17) on Strikeout Cancer Day at Wilkins Stadium.
Game One
Lauren Coleman went 2 for 3 and tied a career-high with 3 RBI to help propel Wichita State (18-28, 7-12) to a 5-1 win over Bradley (15-29, 5-16) on Saturday at Wilkins Stadium.
The Shockers got on the board early against BU starter Katie Dennis. Heather Gerritse gave the Shockers a 2-0 lead with a two-out two-run homer to left. Kersti Rowan scored on the play after singling earlier in the inning.
Gerritse's blast was her team leading sixth of the season and proved to be enough support for WSU pitcher Kasha Kolb.
Kolb continued to dominate after holding Kansas to just one run on Wednesday. Like Wednesday, the sophomore tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts. Kolb struck out the side in the second and fifth innings and allowed only one walk in her 11th complete game of the season.
With Kolb dealing the WSU offense continued to produce starting with Coleman, who launched her first home run of the season with two outs in the second to push the lead to 3-0.
The Braves ended Kolb's run at a shutout with a run in the fourth off of an RBI double by Jacqueline Vitale.
The Shockers added some insurance in the sixth and again it was Coleman who delivered. Singles by Kara L'Huillier and Sammie Shook along with a wild pitch by new BU pitcher Amanda Clack set the table for Coleman with two outs. Coleman singled to left-center to plate L'Huillier and Shook for a 5-1 lead.
Coleman's three RBI was one more than she had coming into the game for the season.
Kolb shut the door in the seventh, retiring the Braves in order for her 12th win of the season. She allowed just four hits on the day for her second win of the week.
Besides Coleman's big game at the plate, Gerritse and L'Huillier each went 2 for 3 with Gerritse picking up two RBI.
Game Two
Kara L'Huillier's three-run home run helped Wichita State (19-28, 8-12) rally from a 6-2 deficit to take game two of Saturday's doubleheader from Bradley (15-30, 5-17), 9-7, at Wilkins Stadium.
Just like in game one WSU struck first, and again it was Lauren Coleman coming up with a big two-out hit. After starting the game at third base Coleman was struck in the head by a foul ball and left the field to become the designated player. With two outs and a runner on first, she took her frustration out on BU pitcher Mackenzie Camp, working the count full and taking the 10th pitch of the at-bat over the wall in left-center for a 2-0 Shocker lead.
However, unlike game one the Braves had an answer with some offense of their own in the top of the third thanks to three WSU errors. In all BU scored a total of six unearned runs in the inning, which was capped by a three-run homer by Jacqueline Vitale, for its first lead of the day.
The Shockers quickly started their comeback in the bottom half of the inning. Sammie Shook took the first pitch she saw from reliever Amanda Clack over the wall in right field for her third home run of the season. Later in the inning Lindsie Mitts singled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kiersten Dixon to cut the lead down to two, 6-4.
BU would add a run in the top of the fifth, and it would not prove to be enough to hold off WSU.
Kersti Rowan and Heather Gerritse singled in the fifth to put runners on base for L'Huillier. After being robbed of two home runs by the wind last Sunday against Southern Illinois, the senior from Flower Mound, Texas, took advantage of the relatively calm wind at Wilkins Stadium and tied the game with a three-run homer to left-center field.
It was L'Huillier's first home run of the season, and it could not have come at a better time for WSU.
The Shockers kept the comeback momentum going in the sixth. With one out, Mitts and Rowan walked. Dixon reached on an infield single to the shortstop who tried to get the speedy Rowan out at second but couldn't get the throw to the bag in time. Without hesitating, Mitts caught the BU defense off guard and rounded third to score easily.
A walk to L'Huillier loaded the bases for Jamie Hull who also walked for an easy RBI and a 9-7 Shocker lead.
After relieving starter Brianna Smet in the third, Kasha Kolb shut down the Braves in the seventh for her second win of the day. The Chelsea, Okla., native finished with six strikeouts in game two for a total of 18 strikeouts on the day.
The win gave WSU its first doubleheader sweep of the season and came in front of 391 fans who helped raise over $1,500 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Mid Kansas affiliate.
WSU will look to sweep the three game series tomorrow as it hosts the Braves in a single game at noon. It's Wichita Eagle Family Day and Senior Day at Wilkins Stadium. Families can get four tickets, four hot dogs, four drinks and four bags of chips for just $32. Come out as we celebrate the careers of seniors Lauren Coleman, Kara L'Huillier and Lindsie Mitts.
