Shocks Split DH at Tulsa

4/6/2010 9:23:00 PM

TULSA, Okla.- After falling 7-0 in game one, Wichita State (12-19) jumped ahead early and never looked back in a 6-4 win in game two of a doubleheader against Tulsa (20-15) at the Hardesty Sports Complex.

Game One

Jackie Lawrence went the distance for Tulsa (20-14), holding Wichita State (11-19) to just two hits to shutout the Shockers in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader.

The Golden Hurricane struck first in the bottom of the first inning. An infield hit by Caitlin Everett set the table for Lauren Lindsay's two-run home run to center, giving TU a 2-0 lead.

WSU threatened in a lengthy top of the second inning that saw TU starter Jackie Lawrence throw 40 pitches after escaping the first in 10 pitches. Three walks loaded the bases with two outs for freshman Danika Miller, who lined out to center to end the inning.

After sitting the Golden Hurricane down in order in the second, Kolb allowed four straight hits to open the third inning before being lifted in favor of Brianna Smet. Smet entered the game with WSU trailing, 5-0, and a runner on base but the junior retired all three batters she faced to limit the damage.

Kiersten Dixon put an end to Lawrence's no-hit bid in the fourth by lining a pitch back up the middle. Running hard the whole way, Dixon stretched the one-out single into a double but was left stranded after a line-out and a pop-up to short.

Smet provided a bright spot out of the bullpen for the Shockers and allowed just one hit through her first three innings in relief. Four straight hits to start the sixth inning tacked two more runs on the board for TU and a 7-0 lead. Lindsay provided the big hit of the inning with a two-run double to left field.

The Shockers went down in order in the seventh to end the game.

Lawrence improved to 8-5 on the season, while Kolb fell to 6-10 after allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings.

Heather Gerritse provided WSU with its only other hit, a single up the middle in the sixth.

Game Two

Sammie Shook went 2 for 4, including a homer, with 2 RBI to help propel Wichita State (12-19) to a 6-4 win over Tulsa (20-15) in game two of the doubleheader.

The Shockers jumped on TU starting pitcher Kalynn Shrock early, something they could not do against Jackie Lawrence in game one. Lindsie Mitts led off the game by reaching base on an error by third baseman Cassidy Bowen.

Kiersten Dixon sacrificed Mitts to second and a walk by Heather Gerritse put runners on first and second with just one out. After a strikeout, Sammie Shook gave WSU its first lead of the day with a single to score Mitts.

Two batters later it was fellow freshman Hayley Temple who blooped a single in between three TU fielders to score two more runs for a 3-0 Shocker lead at the end of the first.

It didn't take long for the Golden Hurricane to cut into the Shocker lead. Three straight hits and a wild pitch led to TU's first run of the game while Vanessa Vice drove in another to bring TU to within one, 3-2 at the end of the first inning.

The Golden Hurricane had a chance to take the lead in the first, but Armagost got Keri Leach to strikeout with the bases loaded.

But WSU came back and restored the cushion for Armagost in the second.

A one-out single by Mitts started the WSU rally. After stealing her 11th base of the season, Mitts scored on Dixon's first triple of the season. Jamie Hull followed with a bloop RBI-single to center to score Dixon and push the lead back to three, 5-2.

TU threatened in the third when a lead-off double by Vice chased Armagost from the game. Reliever Kasha Kolb loaded the bases with a hit batter and an infield single before getting a strikeout and fly out to end the threat.

The Golden Hurricane scratched a run across in the fourth on a bizarre series of events. Two hits and a walk -- on which ball four was awarded due to a delay of game call -- loaded the bases again. Winding up to pitch, the ball slipped out of Kolb's hand and landed near the on-deck circle by the first base dugout. The wild pitch allowed Samantha Cobb to score from third.

Once again the Shockers answered with a run in the top of the fifth on Shook's second homer of the season to give WSU a 6-3 advantage. Schrock had settled down and retired nine WSU batters in a row before Shooks blast cleared the fence in right-center.

TU crept closer once more as a Cassidy Bowen solo home run made it 6-4 in the sixth.

The Golden Hurricane had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh, but Kolb got Cobb to groundout to end the game and pick up her first save of the season.

Armagost grabbed her fifth win of the season while Kolb went five innings and struck out eight out of the bullpen.

TU had chances all night and stranded 14 runners in the game. Each time the Golden Hurricane threatened, however, WSU came up with a big out to end the threat.

The Shockers are back in action this weekend as they host Creighton in an MVC series, April 10-11.
