LAWRENCE, Kan.- Kasha Kolb tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts, helping Wichita State (17-28) take the first half of Wednesday's doubleheader before dropping game two to Kansas (19-30) at Arrocha Ballpark.

Game One

Kasha Kolb tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts, holding Kansas (18-30) to just one run as Wichita State (17-27) took game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, 4-1, at Arrocha Ballpark.

Both pitchers cruised through the first three innings. Kolb racked up most of her strikeouts early, recording six of her first nine outs on strikes.

The Shockers hit the scoreboard first in the fourth inning, giving Kolb a 3-0 cushion. Heather Gerritse led off with a single to left that rolled under the glove of left fielder Maggie Hull. Gerritse moved to second on the error before being replaced by pinch runner Lauren Coleman.

A sacrifice put Coleman on third for Jamie Hull, who picked up her 17th RBI of the season with a bunt single. A Hayley Temple walk and a groundout put runners on second and third with two outs for Danika Miller.

The freshman came through with the big hit of the inning, lining a double to right-center field to score both Hull and Temple to give WSU a 3-0 lead.

The Shockers tacked on a run in the fifth. Kiersten Dixon reached with a one-out single and scored on Gerritse's second double of the season.

That proved to be more than enough for Kolb, who allowed one run in the sixth inning and escaped a bases loaded jam with her 11th strikeout of the game.

Kolb worked a perfect seventh to close out the game and pick up her 11th win and her 10th complete game of the season. She allowed just five hits and three walks while tying her season-high of 12 strikeouts, set earlier this season against Boise State.

Offensively for the Shockers, Gerritse and Hull both went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Miller's second double of the season drove in a team-high two runs in the game.

Game Two

Kansas (19-30) used a five-run fourth to take control in a 9-2 win over Wichita State (17-28) in game two Wednesday's doubleheader at Arrocha Ballpark.

Unlike game one, the Jayhawks took an early lead with a run in the first inning. Alex Jones, Rosie Hull and Mariah Montgomery singled to lead off the inning. Down 1-0 with runners on second and third, WSU pitcher Katie Armagost retired the next three KU batters to limit the damage.

The Shockers battled back in the top of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back one-out singles by Kara L'Huillier and Jamie Hull were the first given up by KU pitcher Allie Clark in 4.0 innings of work on the day, after she threw the final 2.2 innings of game one.

A walk to Hayley Temple loaded the bases. With two outs, Sammie Shook took Clark's offering to the wall in center to score L'Huillier and Hull while Temple was thrown out at the plate to keep the score 2-1.

KU reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the bottom half of the inning thanks to RBI singles by Jones and Hull.

After working a scoreless third, Armagost ran into trouble again in the fourth. Two runs on four hits and a walk ended the freshman's night as WSU went to the bullpen for Brianna Smet.

When the dust had settled, the Jayhawks had sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs to take an 8-2 lead.

KU added a run in the sixth and held the Shockers scoreless in the seventh for the 9-2 win.

Armagost took the loss for WSU, falling to 4-5 on the season. The freshman went 3.1 innings, allowing 12 hits and eight runs.

The Shockers are back in action this weekend as they host Missouri Valley Conference foe Bradley, May 1-2. Saturday is the annual Strikeout Cancer Day at Wilkins Stadium to raise money for breast cancer research. Fans wearing pink to the ballpark can get into the game for just $5.
