STILLWATER, Okla.- Despite a solid start from Kasha Kolb, Wichita State (15-25) could not come up with any offense against No. 7 Oklahoma State (40-7), falling 1-0 in a pitcher's duel at Cowgirl Stadium on Tuesday night.
A matchup between the reigning Big 12 and Missouri Valley Conference Pitchers of the Week lived up to its billing early on. OSU's Anna Whiddon and Kolb matched each other pitch for pitch to start the game.
Whiddon sat down the Shockers in order in the first, all on strikeouts, while Kolb issued a walk and hit a batter before striking out Taylor Marcum to end the inning. That strikeout started a stretch in which Kolb retired five straight.
Kiersten Dixon ended Whiddon's strikeout streak with a line drive single off the wall in left-center. Dixon advanced to second on a groundout but was left stranded.
Kolb danced out of trouble in the third after loading the bases with two outs. Again it was a strikeout of Marcum that ended the inning to preserve the scoreless tie.
The Cowgirls broke through in the fifth when Mariah Gearhart led off the inning with a triple to the gap in right-center. Kolb got Katelyn Bright to pop up for the first out, but Alysia Hamilton singled to right to give OSU a 1-0 lead.
That lead would prove to be enough. Despite excellent pitching from Kolb, the Shocker offense could not put together a rally in the seventh, going down in order to end the game.
Kolb took the tough loss for the Shockers, throwing 6.0 innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight.
Whiddon grabbed her 20th win of the season for OSU by going the distance and surrendering two hits while striking out eight.
WSU returns home this weekend for a three-game series against MVC-leading Southern Illinois, April 24-25. First pitch for game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
