Aces Take Series with 3-2 Win

4/18/2010 3:02:00 PM

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- After falling behind early, Wichita State (15-24, 5-10) rallied to tie the game in the fifth but Evansville (14-23, 7-10) got an RBI single from Brianna Villanueva in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with a 3-2 win in the series finale Sunday at Cooper Stadium.

The Aces grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Amy Gaertner off of WSU starting pitcher Brianna Smet. Jamie Lindauer came around to score on the blast after reaching base with an infield single.

After missing out on a scoring opportunity in the third, the Shockers came through with a two-out RBI in the fourth. Heather Gerritse led off the frame with a single to center and was lifted for pinch runner Holly Eckert.

Eckert moved to second on a sacrifice and to third on a fly ball to right. With two outs Hayley Temple came through for the Shockers, waiting on an off-speed pitch from UE starter Jen McKee and driving it up the middle to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

The Shockers had a chance to take the lead and potentially blow the game open in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs. Lindsie Mitts laid down a perfect bunt base hit to lead off the inning, followed by an infield single from Kersti Rowan and a walk issued to Kara L'Huillier.

But after a line out and pop out, Jamie Hull took a four-pitch walk for an RBI to tie the score, 2-2. Hayley Temple lined a shot off of McKee in the circle, but the UE hurler recovered in time to throw out Temple at first to end the inning.

Reliever Kasha Kolb pitched well in relief, going three innings without allowing a hit, before heading to the seventh.

In the seventh, Tamara Robey led off the inning with a bunt base hit and moved to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. After falling behind in the count, Villanueva singled to right.

WSU right fielder Kiersten Dixon fielded the ball and fired home but it was not in time to prevent Robey from coming across with the winning run.

Kolb took the loss for the Shockers and fell to 9-14 on the season. She threw 3.1 innings allowing just two hits, both in the seventh, with three strikeouts and no walks.

Mitts and Rowan each finished with two hits to lead the Shockers offensively.

WSU stranded 11 runners on the day and had at least one runner left on base every inning except the first.

The Shockers continue their road swing on Tue., April 20, as WSU heads to Stillwater, Okla., for a game against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
