EVANSVILLE, Ind.- After dropping game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Wichita State (15-23, 5-9) rallied with three runs in the seventh and eighth to win an extra inning thriller, 7-4, over Evansville (13-23, 6-10) in game two at Cooper Stadium.
Game One
Evansville (13-22, 6-9) scored two in the second, which proved to be enough to top Wichita State (14-23, 4-9), 3-1, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Aces took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Brianna Villanueva and a sacrifice fly from Halie Malone.
After getting the first out of the third inning, back-to-back singles chased WSU starting pitcher
Brianna Smet from the game for
Kasha Kolb. Kolb retired btoh hitters she faced in the inning, but not before the Aces could plate a run on a double steal.
The Shockers cut in to the UE lead in the top of the fourth.
Heather Gerritse led off the inning with a double over Villanueva's head in right.
Kiersten Dixon followed with a single through the left side that advanced pinch runner
Brittney Osborn to third.
Hayley Temple plated Osborn with a sacrifice fly in foul territory down the right field line. UE pitcher Kendall Kautz avoided further damage with a groundout to end the inning.
Gerritse nearly tied the game in the sixth coming just a few feet from a two-run homer. After
Lauren Coleman led off the inning with a single, Gerritse sent Kautz's offering to the warning track in center field where Jamie Lindauer made the catch with her back against the wall.
Temple led off the seventh with a blast to left that had the distance but hooked foul. Kautz retired the side in order for the 3-1 win.
Smet took the loss for the Shockers falling to 1-5. She allowed three runs in 2.1 innings. In relief, Kolb tossed 3.2 shutout innings allowing just one hit. Kolb retired the first 10 batters she faced.
Game Two
Trailing 2-1 going into the seventh, Wichita State (15-23, 5-9) scored three runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to rally for a 7-4 win over Evansville (13-23, 6-10) in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Copper Stadium.
WSU grabbed the early lead in the first. Lindise Mitts and Kersti Rowan led off the game with back-to-back singles. After a strikeout and fielder's choice,
Kiersten Dixon doubled to right-center to score Mitts and give the Shockers a 1-0 lead.
But the Aces came back in the second and took the lead on a two RBI single by Halie Malone.
The Shockers had a chance to tie the game in the fourth when
Jamie Hull led off the inning with a double.
Hayley Temple moved Hull to third with a sacrifice bunt.
Sammie Shook lined out to short as shortstop Amy Gaertner came up with a diving catch to save a run.
UE starter Jenna McKee got
Danika Miller to ground out to end the threat.
The Aces loaded the bases in the sixth but were unable to add to their lead as Kolb ended the inning with a strikeout.
Getting out of that jam unscathed proved to be big for the Shockers.
Riding that momentum WSU put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. With runners on the corners and one out,
Heather Gerritse laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt to score Rowan and tie the game.
With two outs and the go-ahead run at second, Dixon delivered with her second double of the game to score
Kara L'Huillier.
Jamie Hull and Temple followed with two-out hits, with Temple's scoring Dixon to give the Shockers a 4-2 lead.
But UE answered and tied the score on a two RBI single by Krista Price in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
The WSU offense kept on rolling in the eighth, touching up Aces for three more runs.
Sammie Shook led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on
Danika Miller's double, her first career extra base hit.
Rowan put some pressure on the UE defense with a squeeze bunt to score Shook. With the center fielder late in covering second, Rowan took a wide turn at first to prompt a throw from Malone behind the plate. Malone's throw skipped into centerfield, allowing Miller to score.
When the dust had settled, the Shockers had a 6-4 lead and Rowan stood on third. She would score on
Kara L'Huillier's RBI single.
Kolb sat down the Aces in the eighth to earn her ninth win of the season while Maggie Little took the loss for UE.
WSU will look to take the series with a single game on Sunday with first pitch scheduled at noon.
