SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Wichita State moved to 4-8 in MVC play and 14-22 overall with a doubleheader sweep of Missouri State (13-22, 8-6) on Wednesday night at Killian Stadium.

Game One

Heather Gerritse's two-run homer keyed a three-run third inning as Wichita State (13-22, 3-8) took game one of Wednesday's doubleheader with a 5-1 win over Missouri State (13-21, 8-5) at Killian Stadium.

WSU struck first with a two-out rally in the top of the second. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Hayley Temple scored on Sammie Shook's fifth double of the season. The run off of MSU starter Lauren Supak ended a 22.2 scoreless streak for Supak against the Shockers.

The Shockers added on to their lead in the third. A one-out single by Kersti Rowan set the table for Kara L'Huillier, who broke out of a slump with a double to the gap in left-center. Rowan came all the way around from first to score.

Gerritse then made it 4-0, taking Supak's offering over the wall in left for her fifth home run of the season and first since Feb. 27 against UT-Arlington.

The Bears scratched out a run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to two WSU errors. After a one-out single put Bubba Weiss on first, Madison Hargrove grounded softly between third and short. Third baseman Hayley Temple's off balance throw went wide of first which allowed both runners to move up.

First baseman Jamie Hull tried to throw out Hargrove going from first to second but her throw was in the dirt, allowing Weiss to score.

But the Shockers got that run back in the sixth inning. Kiersten Dixon led off the inning with a double down in the left field corner. With two outs, Shook came up in search of her second RBI and delivered with a single up the middle to push the lead back to four, 5-1.

WSU starter Brianna Smet exited after four innings of work after allowing just three hits and two walks. She struck out two and allowed one unearned run before head coach Mike Perniciaro turned to Kasha Kolb.

Kolb tossed the final three innings for her first save of the season. She sat down all nine batters she faced, five on strikes.

Smet earned her first win of the season to move to 1-4. Her three hits allowed tied a season low, set against UT-Arlington back on Feb. 28.

Game Two

Lindsie Mitts' career-high four hits paced Wichita State (14-22, 4-8) and the Shockers took game two of the doubleheader, 5-3, over Missouri State (13-22, 8-6) Wednesday night at Killian Stadium.

Just like in game one the Shockers hit the scoreboard first, this time with a run in the top of the first off of MSU starter Lauren McGinley. Mitts led off the game with a single and stole second.

Two batters later, Heather Gerritse picked up a two-out RBI with a bloop-single to right.

Jamie Hull helped ignite a two-run second inning with a leadoff solo home run. The blast was her fourth of the season. Hayley Temple's double chased McGinley from the game with WSU up 2-0.

With one out, Mitts drove in Temple with a single to push the lead to 3-0.

But the MSU offense came alive in the bottom of the second scoring, again, thanks to two Shocker errors. Those two errors turned into two unearned runs to cut the lead to 3-2 and WSU called to the bullpen for Kasha Kolb.

A Christa Gammon triple to deep center followed by a single from Kirstin Cutter tied the game, 3-3, in the third.

MSU reliever Natalie Rose and Kolb settled into a groove. Rose got six outs in the air during a stretch while Kolb retired eight straight at one point.

Just as the Shockers had given up their lead with sloppy defense, the Bears returned the favor in the sixth. With two outs Danika Miller singled to right. Lindsie Mitts followed with a single to center that rolled under the glove of center fielder Tyler Porter.

The ball rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Miller to score from first to reclaim the lead.

WSU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Kara L'Huillier doubled to lead-off the inning. After a sacrifice moved her to third, Kiersten Dixon singled to left to plate L'Huillier and push the lead to 5-3.

Kolb finished off the Bears, polishing them up in order for her eighth win of the season.

WSU continues its road swing with three-game set at Evansville this weekend. The Shockers and Aces play a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for noon on Sat., April 17.
