WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State fell to 12-21 and 2-7 in Missouri Valley Conference play after a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Creighton (18-17, 4-5), by scores of 5-1 and 8-6, Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
Game One
Freshman Hayley Temple hit her second home run of the season but it was too little, too last as Creighton (17-17, 3-5) topped Wichita State (12-20, 2-6), 5-1, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
Solid pitching was the theme through the first three innings as both starters, CU's Tara Oltman and WSU's Kasha Kolb, gave up just one hit each.
Designated player Amy Baker put the Bluejays on the scoreboard first with a solo homer to lead-off the fourth. CU tacked on another run thanks to a walk to Michelle Graner and an RBI single by Sara Loeffelholz.
The inning chased Kolb from the game and junior Brianna Smet struck out the first two batters she faced to end the inning and keep the score, 2-0.
WSU put together a two-out rally in the fourth when Kiersten Dixon hit her seventh double of the season and Jamie Hull walked. But Oltman struck out Sammie Shook to end the inning.
CU built on its lead in the fifth with three more runs thanks to a two RBI single by Lauren Larson. Later in the inning, Loeffelholz picked up her second RBI of the day with a double that drove in Graner.
WSU again put two runners in scoring position in the sixth, only to see Oltman get another key strikeout to retire the side.
Down to their last at-bat, the Shockers got on the board thanks to Temple's home run to left-center. It was the freshman's second blast of the season, and her first since mid-March.
The Shockers couldn't add on to the inning and fell, 5-1.
Kolb took the loss and fell to 7-11 on the season after lasting 3.1 innings where she allowed two runs on four hits while striking out six.
Oltman picked up the win for the Bluejays, improving to 14-8 on the season.
Game Two
After falling behind 6-2, Wichita State (12-21, 2-7) rallied to tie the game at six thanks to a three-run homer by Jamie Hull, were denied a comeback victory thanks to a two-run homer by Michelle Graner in an 8-6 Creighton (18-17, 4-5) win in game two.
The Bluejays took an early 3-0 in the first inning off of WSU starter Katie Armagost. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs and a Graner sacrifice fly made it 1-0 CU.
After a groundout the Shockers had a chance to escape the big inning, but Lauren Larson drove in two runs with a single before being caught in a rundown for the final out.
WSU began to chip away at the lead thanks, in part, to poor defense. Lindsie Mitts reached first to start the inning after an error on shortstop Michelle Koch. An infield single and a walk loaded the bases with two outs.
Hayley Temple stepped to the plate and came away with a hard earned RBI after being hit by a pitch to make it 3-1. That would be all the Shockers could gain though as CU starter Kylie Hovinga came up with a strikeout to end the inning.
The Shockers further cut into the lead with a run in the second. Again it was an error that helped facilitate the scoring. Sammie Shook reached first after being hit by a pitch and she scored after center fielder Crista Ruf misplayed a single by Lindsie Mitts.
The third inning would prove to be a productive one for both squads. Renae Sinkler ignited CU's three-run frame with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, Sara Loeffelholz drove in a run on a bunt off of new pitcher Jamie Hull. Hull gave up a two-RBI double to Larsen before getting two strikeouts to end the inning.
WSU one-upped the Bluejays by tieing the game in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of its own.
Heather Gerritse led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on another CU error. Kiersten Dixon followed with a bunt single and Hayley Temple drove in Gerritse with a single to left to make it 6-3.
CU brought in Tara Oltman to try and shutdown the WSU rally, but after throwing a wild pitch to advance the two runners she gave up a three-run homer to Jamie Hull that stayed just inside the left field foul pole.
The blast was Hull's third of the season and it tied the game, 6-6.
WSU turned to its ace, Kasha Kolb, and just like in game one, Oltman and Kolb matched each other pitch for pitch.
But in the sixth, Graner stepped to the plate with a runner on and hit a high fly ball that carried just enough and bounced off the left field foul pole for a two-run homer.
The Shockers had a chance in the sixth to cut into the 8-6 deficit, but Oltman struck out two with a runner in scoring position to escape the inning.
She then retired the side in order in the seventh to end the game.
Hull's three RBI in the game tied her season-high and her homer was her first since hitting a two-run shot against Texas Tech.
WSU will wrap up the series with CU tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
