WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State (9-15, 0-2) offense never got on track against Lauren Supak, as the Shockers fell to 0-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play after a 1-0 loss to Missouri State (6-16, 1-2) on Wednesday evening at Wilkins Stadium.
Pitching dominated the game early on as both starters settled into a groove in the opening innings. Bear starter Lauren Supak retired the first six Shocker hitters she faced, a string broken by a Jamie Hull single up the middle to lead off the third inning. But Supak retired the next three WSU hitters to end the inning.
Sophomore Kasha Kolb worked around a jam in the top of the fourth when Jenna Schwark blooped a double to center field. Battling wind gusts of nearly 30 mph, the ball fell in between Sammie Shook, Hayley Temple and a diving Lindsie Mitts.
But Kolb calmly sat down two of the next three MSU batters with strikeouts to keep the 0-0 tie.
Kolb would not exit the fifth unscathed, however. Madison Hargrove singled up the middle to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Bubba Weiss tried to sacrifice bunt and move Hargrove to third but popped it up while Kirstin Cutter followed with a foul pop out to third.
With two outs, Christa Gammon worked the count full before singling through the right side to drive in Hargrove for a 1-0 MSU lead.
Again it was Hull who tried to start a Shocker rally with a leadoff single in the fifth. But after a failed sacrifice bunt attempt and a fly out, Hull was caught stealing for the third out.
Freshman Katie Armagost entered the game in the sixth and finished the game for the Shockers, allowing just two hits in two innings.
WSU put runners on first and second in the sixth thanks to a walk and pinch-hit single by Kara L'Huillier but again couldn't come up with the big hit.
After retiring the first two Shocker hitters in the seventh, Supak ran into trouble by walking pinch-hitter Heather Gerritse and Brittney Osborn. Senior Lindsie Mitts stepped to the plate hoping to deliver for WSU, but her line drive was snagged by Weiss at third for the final out of the game.
Kolb took the loss for the Shockers and fell to 4-8 on the season.
WSU travels to Normal, Ill., for a three-game series with Illinois State this weekend, March 27-28. Check GoShockers.com for live stats of all three games.
