Cowgirls Edge Shockers, 2-0

WICHITA, Kan.- Despite solid outings by Brianna Smet and Kasha Kolb in the circle, the Wichita State softball team fell to 9-14 on the season as No. 15 Oklahoma State (27-7) took a 2-0 win in a pitcher's duel on Tuesday at Wilkins Stadium.

Junior Brianna Smet made her third start of the season and ran into trouble early. OSU leadoff hitter Mariah Gearhart laid down a bunt base hit on the first pitch of the game and advanced to second after an infield hit by Katelyn Bright. Smet walked Alysia Hamilton to load the bases with no outs.

But Smet surrendered just one run in the inning when Julie Ward lined to first. First baseman Jamie Hull knocked the ball down and threw to second for the force out. Gearhart scored on the play but that would be all the Cowgirls would get as Smet got Megan Castle and Ashley Boyd to groundout.

In the second, Amy Graham reached after being  hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and moved to second on a single by Chelsea Garcia. A sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with just one out for the top of the OSU order. Smet got Gearhart to foul out before Bright singled to right, scoring Graham.

Shocker right fielder Kiersten Dixon kept the score at 2-0 with a perfect throw home, catching Garcia trying to score from second and picking up her third outfield assist of the season to end the inning.

That score would hold up for Cowgirl starting pitcher Kat Espinosa. The freshman came into the game leading the team with a 1.79 ERA and allowed just three hits and one walk in a complete game effort.

The Shockers had a chance to make some noise in the third when Kersti Rowan blooped a one-out single down the left field line. A perfect nine-for-nine on the basepaths, Rowan tried to make it 10-for-10 but was called out for leaving first base early in an attempt to steal second.

Senior Lindsie Mitts singled a few pitches later, but Espinosa got Dixon to fly out to end the inning.

WSU had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh when Danika Miller reached on an error by OSU first baseman Julie Ward. That brought the tying run to the plate, but Espinosa got Jamie Hull to pop up to second to end the game.

Smet fell to 0-2 on the season and went 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and two runs. She allowed just one hit after the second inning. Sophomore Kasha Kolb closed out the game for WSU, throwing a perfect 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.

WSU will host Missouri Valley Conference foe Missouri State tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. The Bears (5-13, 0-2) are coming off of two losses last weekend to Southern Illinois.
