WACO - The Shockers suffered a tough extra-inning defeat in their opening game of the weekend before falling to No. 25 Baylor in the nightcap.
Game One: Wichita State 5 - Tulsa 8
The Shockers used offensive power for a pair of key homeruns in their first game of the weekend at the QTI/Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor, but could not hold off a late surge from the Golden Hurricane as they lost in extra innings, 8-5.
The Shockers threatened in their first at bat, using a double from left fielder Kersti Rowan to put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Golden Hurricane starter Jackie Lawrence coaxed a groundball and a strikeout to end the threat.
Tulsa used a Shocker miscue to get on the board first in the bottom of the second. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with one down before Caitlin Everett's soft grounder down the third base line was misplayed. A run scored on the play before Shocker starter Katie Armagost threw for back-to-back groundball outs.
Heather Gerritse tied the score with one swing. The sophomore catcher blasted a solo shot to center to knot the game, 1-1, in the top of the fourth before the Shockers sparked again in their next at bat. With one out, senior center fielder Lindsie Mitts tagged a line drive through the left side, putting herself on for Kiersten Dixon coming up behind her. The junior right fielder pulled a long ball over the left field wall to give the Shocks the lead, 3-1.
A clutch hit for pinch hitter Holly Eckert temporarily busted the game open in the top of the sixth. With two aboard, Eckert was called upon to pinch hit. Working against a full count, Eckert came through. Her two-out single to left extended the Shocker lead, 5-1.
The large lead was short-lived, however, when the Hurricane responded with a two-out, two-run bomb off the bat of Keri Leach to close the deficit, 5-3. A two-run homer from Tulsa's Samantha Cobb erased the lead altoghether, sending the game to extra inings. Tulsa made it three-consecutive innings with a homerun in the bottom of the eighth as Leach's second homer of the game handed the Shockers the 8-5 loss.
Game Two: Wichita State 0 - No. 25 Baylor 8
One big inning and consistent hitting led the No. 25 Baylor Bears (4-3) against the Shockers (1-3) during Friday night's 8-0 Baylor victory.
The Bears were led by designated player Jordan Vannatta, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI while the Shockers were paced by left fielder Kersti Rowan's 1-for-2 performance.
Baylor struck first for two runs using a two-out rally in the Bears' first at bat. Jordan Vannatta and Courtney Nieten connected on back-to-back singles before Bree Hanafin drove them both in with a double to left. Center fielder Kathy Shelton knocked in another run in the top of the third, giving the Bears the 3-0 edge.
A four-run fourth all went a long way in putting the game out of reach for the Shockers. The Bears batted around as they strung together three-straight hits, including a two-run single off the left field wall from Vannatta. Nieten's third hit in three at bats chased Shocker starter Kasha Kolb from the game. Reliever Katie Armagost ran into bad luck when an error put the first batter she faced onboard, driving in another Baylor run to extend the lead, 7-0.
A Shocker fielder's choice notched the Bears' final run in the top of the fifth to seal the run-rule victory, 8-0.
The Shockers are in action again on Saturday morning when they face Central Arkansas at 10 a.m.
