Kan. - Wichita State picked up a 25-20 win in the first set, but No. 12 UNI took the
next three sets to close out a 3-1 win in a match between the Missouri Valley
Conference's top two teams Friday at Charles Koch Arena. UNI won 20-25, 25-23,
25-20 and 25-18.
A
crowd of 3,017 watched the Shockers' nine-match winning streak come to a close
and UNI improve to 17-0 in conference play. The Panthers have won 22 matches in
a row.
The
Shockers (20-6, 13-4) entered Friday's match in second place in the conference
standings behind first-place UNI (26-2 overall).
Shocker
sophomore Emily Adney led Wichita State with 16 kills. Junior Mary Elizabeth
Hooper picked up 46 assists and junior Sarah Waldorf recorded 21 digs.
Junior
Michelle Burow paced UNI with 17 kills. Bre Payton had 46 assists and Ellie
Blankenship picked up 21 digs.
UNI
took a 3-1 lead early in the first set, but a kill from Shocker Camri Zwiesler
followed by an attacking error by UNI tied the set, 3-3. The Shockers' first
lead of the set came on a bad set by the Panthers, 4-3. Wichita State was able
to build several one-point leads in the close set, but UNI quickly answered
each time in the set, which had 15 ties. The Panthers broke a tie and built up
a 17-15 lead - their largest early in the set - following a service error from Adney
and an attacking error from Zwiesler. A kill by Sarah McGee and UNI attacking
error tied the game, 17-17. Back-to-back kills from Zwiesler, assisted by Hooper,
followed by a kill from Amanda Backes, also assisted by Hooper, gave the
Shockers their largest lead of the set, 21-18. Wichita State later took a 23-20
lead on a UNI service error. Attacks by Backes and Adney closed out the 25-20
win for the Shockers. Adney picked up five kills in the set, Hooper had 16 assists
and Waldorf had seven digs for Wichita State.
UNI
extended to a 6-3 lead early in the second set. The Shockers answered with
four-straight points to take a 7-6 lead, as Hooper and Adney each picked up one
kill and Zwiesler recorded a service ace during the stretch. The Panthers
picked up two-straight points after a timeout, but back-to-back blocks by
Wichita State gave the Shockers a 9-8 lead. UNI later built up a 16-13 lead on
a kill from Amy Braun and attacking error by Zwiesler. Three-straight points
from the Shockers, including two kills from Adney, tied the set, 17-17. A
service ace from Adney boosted Wichita State to a 20-19 lead, but the Panthers
quickly responded to take a 21-20 lead. They led the remainder of the set and a
kill by Burow gave the Panthers a 25-23 win in the second set. Adney once again
led the Shockers in kills, with four in the second set. The score was tied 10
times and saw seven lead changes in the second set.
Wichita
State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third set on two kills from Adney.
Another Adney kill and a block from Backes and Field boosted the Shockers to a
4-1 edge. UNI later tied the set with a block, 5-5. A block from Hooper and
McGee tied the set, 9-9. Kills from Adney tied the score, 10-10, and 11-11. The
Shockers built up a 13-11 lead off of an attacking error by UNI and another
kill by Adney. The Panthers took a 17-15 lead on back-to-back kills from Burow.
UNI extended to a 20-16 lead on a kill from Burow. A kill from Backes and
attacking error by Burow cut the Panther lead to, 20-18. UNI extended its lead
and won the third set, 25-20, on an attacking error by Adney, who led the
Shockers with six kills in the set.
The
Shockers led 4-1 early in the fourth set on a service error and three attacking
errors by UNI. Three kills from Braun and a kill from Bre Payton put the
Panthers in the lead, 7-6. A
service ace by Candice Burke and a Wichita State attacking error gave UNI a 9-6
lead. Back-to-back kills from Field gave the Shockers an 11-10 lead. UNI later
went ahead 16-12. The Shockers cut the Panthers' lead to 20-17 on a kill by
Ashley Andrade. Back-to-back blocks gave the Panthers a 24-18 edge. UNI closed
out the match with a service ace from Payton and sealed a 25-18 win in the
fourth set.
The
two teams last met Sept. 18 in Cedar Falls, when the Panthers won by scores of,
25-23, 25-18 and 25-23.
The
Shockers are next in action on Sat., Nov. 20 when they host Bradley in the
final regular-season match of the season.
Senior night festivities begin at 6:55 p.m. and the match will start at
7:07 p.m.
