Box Score CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Wichita State Shockers defeated the
Southern Illinois Salukis 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 25-14 to win their 20th
match of the year and have now had eight-straight seasons of 20 or more
wins. The Shockers improved to
20-5 overall and 13-3 in the Missouri Valley.
Mary Elizabeth Hooper led the Shockers with 53 assists and
added 12 digs. Emily Adney had a
team-high 22 kills and added 11 digs.
Sarah Waldorf led WSU with 20 digs.
The teams traded points in the first set until the Shockers
took their first lead at 7-6 on a net violation by the Salukis. A kill by Adney pushed the Shock lead
to 13-10 and forced SIU to take their first timeout of the match. Back to back service aces by Sarah
McGee, her first this season, gave WSU an 18-13 lead. After the Salukis cut the lead to 18-16, Wichita State took
their first timeout of the night.
A kill by Elizabeth Field gave WSU a 21-18 lead and the Shockers
finished off the set 25-18 with a team block by McGee and Amanda Backes.
A net violation gave the Shockers a 6-3 lead in the second
set. Southern Illinois battled
back to tie the set at seven until a kill by Camri Zwiesler gave the Shockers
the lead back at 8-7. The teams
traded points until a hitting error by Zwiesler gave SIU the lead at 18-14. SIU pushed the lead to 20-15 and forced
WSU to take their second timeout of the set. The Shockers cut the Salukis lead to 22-18 but SIU finished
off the set 25-19 with a kill from Alicia Johnson.
The teams traded points to start the third set until a kill
by Adney gave the Shockers a 5-3 lead.
The Shockers pushed their lead to 9-5 on a kill by Backes and forced
Southern Illinois to take the first timeout of the set. A kill by McGee gave the Shockers a 12-8
lead and a block by Adney pushed the Shock lead to 15-10. WSU took a 19-13 lead on a hitting
error by SIU's Johnson and pushed the lead to 23-17 on another hitting error by
Johnson. Wichita State won the
second set 25-17 on a kill by senior Lindsey Eckenrode.
The Shockers took a 3-0 lead on a kill by Adney in the
fourth set. A kill from McGee gave
the Shock an 8-3 lead and forced a timeout by SIU. Another kill from Adney gave WSU a 12-6 lead. An attack error by SIU pushed the
Shockers lead to 18-8 and the Shock finished off the match 25-14 with another
kill from Adney.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Nov. 19 vs.
Northern Iowa at 7 p.m.
