Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Wichita State came back from a 2-1
deficit to defeat Evansville in five sets.
The Shockers (19-5, 12-3) won by scores of 25-12, 22-25, 21-25, 25-17
and 15-12.
The Shockers had four players with double-digit kills
including Emily Adney with 22, Camri Zwiesler with 19, Sarah McGee with 16 and
Amanda Backes with 12. Zwiesler added 24
digs, while McGee had eight blocks. Mary
Elizabeth Hooper had 63 assists and 16 digs, while Sarah Waldorf had 24 digs.
The Shockers took an early 4-0 lead in the first set led by
three kills from Amanda Backes. A kill
from Mary Elizabeth Hooper made the score 10-4, while another Backes kill
increased the lead to 20-9. WSU finished
off the set 25-12 with a kill from Camri Zwiesler.
The Aces jumped out 5-0 in the second set helped by four
Shocker hitting errors. Another WSU hitting
error increased the lead to 9-3. The
Shockers pulled to within 10-8 with a block by Sarah McGee and then tied the
score 12-12 with three-straight Zwiesler kills. The Aces went back up 16-13
with a kill and the Shockers could get no closer than one the rest of the way
as UE took the set 25-22.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the third set until the
Aces used a kill and a service ace to take a 13-10 lead. A kill by Emily Adney pulled the Shocks
within 14-13, but the Aces went back up 17-14 with a kill. Four-straight points by WSU tied the score at
18, but the Shocks could never take the lead as UE won 25-21.
The Aces again took an early lead in the fourth set at
3-0. The Shockers came back to tie it at
eight after a block by Zwiesler and Ashley Andrade. A Backes kill and a UE hitting error gave WSU
a 10-8 lead and back-to-back McGee kills increased the lead to 20-13. The Shockers went on to win the set 25-17 on
a kill from Andrade.
The fifth set went back-and-forth until the Aces took a 9-7
lead with a block. The Shockers tied it
at 10 on a Backes kill and took an 11-10 lead after a UE miscue. After an Ace block tied the score at 12, the
Shockers responded with two kills from McGee and one from Zwiesler for the
15-12 win.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Nov. 13 at Southern
Illinois at 7 p.m.
