Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - In front of 1,949 fans at Koch Arena the
Wichita State Shockers defeated the Southern Illinois Salukis, 25-18, 25-20,
25-19 to improve to 12-5, 5-3 on the season.
Junior Mary Elizabeth Hooper led all players with 38 assists
and sophomore Emily Adney led all players with 14 kills. Junior Camri Zwiesler added 12 kills
and a match high 15 digs. Southern
Illinois fell to 12-6, 3-5 on the season.
In the first set, the teams traded points until the Salukis
took their first timeout after the Shockers took a 12-8 lead. Out of the break the teams continued to
go back and forth until a service error by Southern Illinois pushed the
Shockers lead to 20-16. Two attack
errors by SIU gave the Shockers a commanding 22-16 lead. A block assist by Adney and freshman
middle blocker Ashley Andrade gave the Shockers the win in the first set.
The second set started just like the first with the teams
trading points until the Shockers took an 8-4 lead on an attack error by the
Salukis, who took their first timeout of the set. After the timeout, Hooper gave the Shockers a 12-6 lead with
a kill. The Salukis cut Wichita
State's lead to 15-14 after an attack error by Adney. An attack error by Southern Illinois and three kills by
Zwiesler gave WSU a 22-19 and forced SIU to take their second timeout. Another kill by Zwiesler, a service ace
by Hooper and a kill by middle blocker Elizabeth Field closed the second set in
favor of the Shockers.
The Shock took a 7-2 lead on senior Sarah McGee's second
consecutive kill. A service error
by Southern Illinois and another kill by McGee gave WSU a 9-3 lead and forced
SIU to take a timeout. Kills by
Zwiesler and McGee pushed the Shockers to a 12-3 lead. Two WSU errors and kills by SIU's Alicia
Johnson and Sydney Clark cut the Shockers lead to 12-7 and forced WSU to take
their first timeout of the set. A
kill by Adney gave the Shockers a 16-8 lead. Senior Lindsey Eckenrode gave the Shocks a 20-11 lead with
her first kill of the night. A
block assist by Johnson and Jasmine Conner cut the Shockers lead to 21-16. A kill by Hooper gave the Shockers the
match at 25-19.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Oct. 16 when they
host Evansville at 5 p.m.
