Shockers Win Best Western Volleyball Classic

Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - A trio of close sets provided a great show for the crowd of 3,134 at Charles Koch Arena as the No. 25 Shockers swept the Oklahoma Sooners to win the Best Western Volleyball Classic.

The first set went back and forth until the Shockers (5-1) grabbed a 7-5 lead on a block by Emily Stockman and Stephanie Tokarz. The Sooners (5-2) came back to take the lead at 13-12 after a Shocker hitting error and increased it to 16-14 with a block. WSU responded with a 5-0 run to go back in front 19-16 and increased it to 23-19 on a kill by Katie Niggemeyer. OU pulled to within 23-22, but the Shocks won the set 25-22 on a kill by Stockman.

The Sooners grabbed an early 8-6 lead in the second set, but the Shockers came back to take a 9-8 lead on a kill by Tokarz. A kill by Sarah McGee increased the lead to 18-15 and WSU won the set 25-22 on a kill by Amanda Backes.

The teams traded points early in the third set until the Shocks took a 15-10 lead after back -to-back aces by Stockman. The Sooners cut the lead to 16-15 after a Shocker hitting error, but with the help of a late scoring spree by Stockman and McGee, WSU pulled away to win 25-21.

Stockman paced the offense with 14 kills and Niggemeyer followed suit with 11 of her own, both guided by 36 assists from sophomore setter Mary Elizabeth Hooper.

Hooper and senior libero Melissa Granville were named to the All-Tournament team while Stockman took the Tournament MVP honors.

The Shockers are next in action on Tue., Sept. 8 against Oral Roberts inside Charles Koch Arena.
