Shockers Defeat Rice, 3-1

Box Score HOUSTON, Texas - No. 23 Wichita State won the Mizuno Invitational II with a 3-1 victory over Rice. The Shockers (9-1) won by scores of 19-25, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-21.

Emily Stockman, who was named tournament MVP, led the Shockers with 17 kills and 20 digs, while Sarah McGee added 10 kills and six blocks. Mary Elizabeth Hooper totaled 41 assists and Melissa Granville had 19 digs.  McGee and Granville were also named to the all-tournament team.

The Owls jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set, but the Shockers pulled to within 13-12 after a Rice hitting error. The teams traded points until the Owls took a 19-16 advantage with a block and Rice pulled away to win the first set 25-19.

Rice grabbed an early 3-1 lead in the second set, but the Shockers scored seven-straight behind the serving of Amanda Backes to take an 8-3 lead. The Shockers continued to cruise and increased the lead to 12-4 after a kill by Katie Niggemeyer and won the set 25-16.

The third set went back-and-forth until the Owls took a 12-10 lead after a Shocker hitting error. Rice increased the lead to three at 15-12, but the Shockers came back to tie it at 16. After a block by Rice, the Shockers reeled off three-straight points to go in front 19-17. Emily Stockman and Sarah McGee each had two kills down the stretch as WSU won 25-21.

The teams traded points in the fourth set until a service ace by Melissa Granville gave the Shocks a 13-10 advantage. The Owls used a Shocker hitting error to cut the lead to 17-16, but WSU held on to win the set 25-21.

The Shockers are next in action on Tue., Sept. 15 when they play an exhibition match against the Italian National Team inside Charles Koch Arena.
