Shocks Open Season with Sweep

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –  No. 17 Wichita State opened the 2009 season with a sweep of Belmont.  The Shockers won by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-13.

 

The Shockers out hit the Bruins .333 to .023 in the match.  Emily Stockman led WSU with nine kills and also added five digs, while hitting .368.  Katie Niggemeyer added seven kills while hitting .500 and Amanda Backes had seven kills and hit .400.  Mary Elizabeth Hooper had 24 assists, two kills and four digs, while Melissa Granville totaled 11 digs and three service aces.

 

A service ace by Katie Niggemeyer gave the Shockers an early 9-3 lead in the first set.  WSU continued to cruise taking an 18-8 lead after a kill by Mary Elizabeth Hooper and went on to win the set 25-15 on a service ace by Melissa Granville. 

 

The Shockers hit .393 in the first set, while holding Belmont to a -.034 clip. 

 

Belmont jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set, but the Shocks responded with a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead.  An ace by Belmont tied the score at five and the teams traded points until the Shocks took a 12-9 lead after an error by the Bruins.  A 3-0 run by Belmont tied the score at 12 and the teams went back-and-forth until the Bruins took a 19-17 lead on a service ace.  Back-to-back Shocker kills gave WSU a 20-19 lead and kills by Sarah McGee down the stretch helped the Shocks to a 25-23 win.

 

A service ace by Hooper gave WSU a 7-5 lead in the third set and the Shocks increased the lead to 14-8 after an ace by Granville.  A kill by Emily Stockman put the Shockers up 20-9 and WSU won the set 25-13.

 

The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Aug. 29 against Pittsburgh at 9 a.m. Central time.
