Box Score WICHITA -- The Wichita State baseball team (25-24, 9-7 MVC) snapped a four-game losing streak as the Shockers picked up a 4-1 win over Creighton (28-22, 14-7) in the series opener Thursday night at Eck Stadium.
Eight different Shockers collected hits on the night, with
Bret Bascue leading the way with a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored. Robbie Knight and T.J. Roemmich each posted two hits for Creighton while the rest of the Bluejay order was held hitless.
Roemmich's two-out home run in the fourth to right centerfield got Creighton on the board first, but the Shockers responded with three in the bottom of the frame to claim their first lead of the night.
Just like Creighton, the Shockers did it with the long ball as a one-out solo shot from
Ryan Jones coupled with a two-run blast by
Chance Sossamon gave WSU a 3-1 edge after four.
Bret Bascue saved a run in the top of the fifth by throwing out a Creighton runner at the plate for the third out.
WSU added another in the bottom of the frame after a two-out double by
Clint McKeever allowed
Ryan Engrav to pick up an RBI one batter later after slapping a single to left that extended the Wichita State advantage to 4-1 after five.
It was all the offense
Tim Kelley (5-3) needed, as the sophomore was dominant, scattering just four hits in the complete game win, walking just one and striking out nine.
Creighton starter Jeremy Hauer (1-6) scattered four runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the losing effort.
The teams square off again tomorrow at 7 p.m., at Eck Stadium.
