Box Score FORT WORTH, Texas ? Wichita State took a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning, but could not hold on as No. 11 TCU scored four in the eighth to beat the Shockers 6-5.
Josh Rosecrans went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Shockers, while Will Baez drove in two runs. Starter Tim Kelley went a career-long 6.2 innings and tied his career with eight strikeouts. He allowed just two runs on six hits. Reliever Josh Smith took the loss.
TCU jumped on the board in the first inning off of WSU starter Tim Kelley. Matt Carpenter moved into second base on a wild pitch by Kelley after reaching with a single through the right side with one out. A two-out walk to Matt Curry put runners at first and second before Jason Coats singled to give TCU a 1-0 lead. A double by Taylor Featherston brought another run across for a 2-0 lead, but Kelley struck out Matt Vern to end the threat.
In the fourth inning, Clint McKeever earned a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, Josh Rosecrans singled up the middle to pull the Shockers to within one at 2-1.
Back-to-back doubles by Ryan Jones and Chris O'Brien in the sixth tied the score at two. With the bases loaded, Taylor Brown singled to centerfield off TCU reliever Taylor Cragin to give WSU a 3-2 lead. With two outs, Will Baez dropped a double into shallow right field to put the Shocks up 5-2.
Kelley avoided trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning. A one-out double by Curry and a Shocker error put runners at the corners with two outs. Vern lined a ball into deep right field and Jones made a spectacular catch to end the inning.
TCU tied the score at five with a three-run home run by Vern in the bottom of the eighth inning off Shocker reliever Grant Muncrief. The Horned Frogs took a 6-5 lead with a two-out double by Corey Steglich and a single by Ben Carruthers. That proved to be the game winner.
The Shockers and Horned Frogs meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday in game two of the series.
