Shocks Fall to No. 5 Iowa State

Box Score AMES, Iowa - Wichita State ended its season with a three-set loss to No. 5 Iowa State in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.  The Cyclones won by scores of 27-25, 25-21 and 25-18.  WSU ends its season at 26-7.

Emily Stockman led WSU with 12 kills and 12 digs while Mary Elizabeth Hooper had 30 assists.

The Shockers grabbed an early 5-2 lead in the first set after a block by Sarah McGee and Amanda Backes, but the Cyclones went on a 4-0 run to grab a 10-9 lead.  A kill and service ace by Katie Niggemeyer put WSU in front 13-11, but ISU again responded with a 5-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. The Shockers answered with a run of their own with four-straight points, two kills by McGee, a block by McGee and Backes and a service ace by Hooper, to grab a 17-16 lead. Another 3-0 run by the Cyclones gave them a 19-17 lead, but the Shockers came back to tie it at 22 with a block by Niggemeyer and Hooper. A kill by Emily Stockman brought the Shockers to set point at 24-23, but ISU won four of the next five points to take a 27-25 win.

The Cyclones raced out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and increased it to 12-5 after a WSU error.  The Shockers answered with a 11-4 run to tie the score at 16, but another ISU kill put the Cyclones up 20-17.  ISU went on to win the set 25-21.

ISU took an early 9-4 lead in the third set, but a kill by Backes pulled the Shocks to within 12-9.  Back-to-back Shocker hitting errors gave ISU a 17-11 lead, but back-to-back kills by Stockman pulled WSU within 21-16.  The Cyclones won the set 25-18.
