WICHITA – The Wichita State men's basketball team never trailed in a decisive 81-69 exhibition win over Newman University on Saturday night.
The Shockers were led by 16 points from sophomore guard Toure' Murry on 5-of-8 from the floor. Sophomore center Garrett Stutz had 12 points and seven rebounds while junior guard Graham Hatch added 13 points, five boards, and three assists in the win.
Chip Steven led the Jets with 15 points including a 3-for-6 line from behind the arc. Keaton Schultz and Jaray Mathews each had 12 points for NU.
WSU went up 11-6 in the first and then took a 19-10 lead at the 11:39 mark as Stutz contributed six points off the bench on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.
Following a Newman answer, the Shockers continued to use an up-tempo style offense to their advantage, going up 26-16 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first. A scoring run by the Jets cut the deficit to seven for the visiting team. Freshman guard Demetric Williams dropped in a layup and one to advance the Shocker lead back into double figures.
WSU pushed the lead up to 14 on unanswered baskets by Stutz and Williams. Newman countered with a pair of buckets of their own as the Shockers headed into the locker room with an 11-point lead.
Stutz paced the Shockers with eight points off the bench in the first half. Williams added another seven points while Hatch had six points and four boards in the opening 20 minutes while junior J.T. Durley notched four points, four boards, and four assists at the break.
The second half featured more Shocker offense as the home team hit 8-of-12 from the floor in the first eight minutes to go up 58-41.
A resilient Newman squad continued to battle back as the Jets closed the margin to only eight points as Tyler Nordman and Schultz hit a pair of threes.
A trey by sophomore guard David Kyles saw the Shockers use a 6-0 run of their own, putting the home team up 14. Turnovers then started to plague the Shockers as WSU had 19 in the second half with the Jets getting 15 points in response to make the score 74-65.
A pair of free throw shots with just under a minute remaining from Hatch and another one from Williams sealed the win for the Shockers as the Jets were unable to mount a comeback.
Williams finished with 11 points for Wichita State.
WSU will open the 2009-10 season at home on Sunday, Nov. 15, as they host Fairleigh Dickinson at 3:05 p.m.
