OMAHA, Neb. - Wichita State dropped a four-set match to No. 20 UNI in the championship match of the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Panthers won by scores of 26-28, 25-19, 25-11 and 25-18.
Emily Stockman led the Shockers with 15 kills, while Mary Elizabeth Hooper had 42 assists and Melissa Granville had 23 digs.
The two teams raced out to a 6-6 tie in the first set before a kill by Emily Stockman put the Shocks in front 9-6. A Panther hitting error increased the lead to 16-12, but UNI tied the score at 21 after a Shocker hitting error. The teams traded points until a service ace by UNI put the Panthers in front 24-22. WSU scored three-straight to take a 25-24 lead and won 28-26 on a Panther hitting error.
The second set went back-and-forth until a UNI block gave the Panthers an 11-8 lead. UNI increased its lead to 18-13 with back-to-back kills and never looked back in the 25-19 win.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the third set and increased it to 9-1 after a block, a service ace and a kill. UNI cruised in the set taking a 25-11 win.
Back-to-back kills by UNI gave the Panthers an 8-4 advantage in the fourth set and the lead was increased to eight at 18-10 after a WSU error. Two kills by Stockman and one by Kim Wadsworth pulled the Shocks to within 19-14, but UNI went on to win 25-18.
Senior Emily Stockman and sophomore Mary Elizabeth Hooper both earned all-tournament team honors.
