WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State men's basketball team used a 23-4 run in the first six minutes of the second half to pull away and take a 79-50 win against Arkansas-Monticello as part of the O'Reily Auto Parts CBE Classic, Wednesday night in Charles Koch Arena.
Junior JT Durley and sophomore Toure Murry led the way for the Shockers (2-0) with 15 points apiece. Sophomore David Kyles also hit double-figures with 11 points. The Weevils (1-1) were led by DeAngelo McIntosh's nine points.
The Shockers started fast, with an 8-0 lead going into the first media timeout. WSU's defense not only shutout the Weevil offense, but held UAM to just three shot attempts and forced four turnovers.
UAM's first basket didn't come until the 14:30 mark of the half, a three-pointer from Gil Verner. By then WSU had built a 13-4 lead thanks to transition baskets and a nifty inside move from Durley.
The Weevils used a 9-0 run, aided by two three-pointers from McIntosh, to pull within one, 17-16, with 8:40 on the clock. WSU used an 8-1 run of its own to answer and take control. UAM used four three-pointers in the half to keep the score close, but still trailed 32-24 at the half.
WSU started even faster in the second half as Kyles and Durley scored six points to fuel an 18-2 run in the first 4:47 of the period to stretch the Shocker lead to 50-26. During the run the Shockers shot 90-percent from the field, including two from behind the arc.
From there the Shockers cruised, getting fastbreak opportunities by forcing eight more UAM turnovers. While the Weevils improved their shooting from the field, they ran cold from behind the arc missing all three attempts in the second half.
WSU took care of the ball the entire game and committed just eight turnovers, including none in the second half. The Shocker defense, however, forced a total of 25 turnovers.
The Shockers head to the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., where they will face Pittsburgh on Nov. 23, at the CBE Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the game can be seen on ESPN2.
