WICHITA, Kan. - Emily Stockman's 17 kills paced a balanced Wichita State attack and led the Shockers to a 3-1 win over Evansville Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
Stockman also had 23 digs, while Kim Wadsworth had 13 kills, and Katie Niggemeyer had 10 kills. Mary Elizabeth Hooper finished with 48 assists and Melissa Granville added 22 digs.
The first set went back and forth until the Shockers went on a 5-0 run behind the serving of Sarah Waldorf to take a 13-8 lead. A kill by Emily Stockman increased the lead to 17-11, but the Aces pulled to within 23-19 on a kill by Ginta Gabruseva. Kills by Sarah McGee and Stockman closed out the set 25-19 for the Shockers.
UE raced out to a 12-4 lead in the second set before the Shockers were able to pull to within 18-17 on a kill by Katie Niggemeyer. A kill by Amanda Backes tied the score at 18, but that was as close as the Shockers would get as the Aces went on to win 25-23.
WSU wasted no time after the intermission and stormed out to a 8-2 lead behind kills from four different Shockers and four UE errors. The Shockers didn't let up and led by as many as 14, taking the set 25-11.
Three kills by Stockman helped fuel another quick start for the Shockers in the fourth set. WSU built a 10-3 lead to take control of the set. The Aces fought back and pulled to within three, 20-17, before a UE error sandwiched between two Shocker kills gave WSU a 23-17 cushion. Niggemeyer put the final nail in the coffin with a kill to give the Shockers a 25-19 win to take the match, 3-1.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Oct. 10 against Southern Illinois at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
