Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa - Wichita State won its 12th match of the year with a sweep of Drake. The Shockers (12-3, 3-2) won by scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-23.
Junior
Sarah McGee set the school record for hitting percentage in a match with a .833 percentage. She totaled 10 kills on 12 swings to top the previous record of .818 held by Elizabeth Meyers and Carrie Gerth.
Emily Stockman and
Katie Niggemeyer each had 11 kills, while
Amanda Backes added 10.
Mary Elizabeth Hooper had 42 assists and
Melissa Granville had 21 digs.
Three early kills from
Amanda Backes gave the Shocks an 11-5 lead in the first set and a kill by
Katie Niggemeyer increased the lead to 15-8. DU used a 4-0 run to pull within 17-13, but the Shocks finished the set on an 8-3 run to win 25-16.
The second set went back and forth until a Backes kill put the Shocks up 7-5. Three-straight kills by
Emily Stockman increased the lead to 14-10 and a kill by Niggemeyer gave WSU a 20-11 advantage. The Bulldogs scored three-straight to make it 21-15, but the Shockers closed out the set with a 25-16 win.
The teams traded points in the third set until back-to-back kills by Drake gave the Bulldogs an 8-6 lead. DU increased it to 18-14, but back-to-back kills by
Sarah McGee pulled the Shockers to within 22-20. A kill by
Kim Wadsworth gave WSU a 23-22 lead and the Shocks won 25-23 on a kill by McGee.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Oct. 9 against Evansville at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
