Shocker Rally Falls Short

Box Score CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Shockers dropped a thrilling five-set match at UNI after dropping the first two sets to the first-place Panthers.  UNI won by scores of 33-31, 25-20, 18-25, 22-25, and 18-16.

Emily Stockman led the Shockers with 25 kills and 23 digs, while Mary Elizabeth Hooper had a career-high 61 assists and 10 digs.  Sarah McGee added 14 kills and nine blocks and Melissa Granville had 25 digs.

The first set went back-and-forth until a Shocker block and back-to-back UNI hitting errors gave WSU a 14-11 lead.  The Panthers tied it at 16 with a block and took a 19-18 lead with a kill.  A WSU hitting error increased the Panther lead to 22-18, but the Shockers pulled to within 22-23 after kills by Emily Stockman and Katie Niggemeyer.  UNI reached set point at 24-22 with a kill, but the Shockers tied it at 24 on a kill by Stockman.  The teams then traded points until UNI finally scored two-straight to take a 33-31 win.

The Panthers raced out to an early 7-3 lead in the second set and a WSU hitting error increased the lead to 10-4.  UNI continued to be in control of the set until a service ace by Sarah Waldorf pulled the Shocks to within 23-20.  UNI scored the final two points for a 25-20 win.

The teams traded points in the third set until the Shockers grabbed a 10-6 lead on a block by Sarah McGee and Stockman.  A kill by Katie Niggemeyer increased the Shocker lead to 18-13 and WSU cruised to a 25-18 win.

The Shockers jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set after a kill by Kim Wadsworth.  Another Wadsworth kill gave WSU a 9-3 advantage before the Panthers pulled to within 14-13 with a kill.  UNI took the lead 21-20 with a kill, but the Shockers scored five of the last six points to take a 25-22 win.

The fifth set went back-and-forth until a service ace by Stockman put WSU up 6-3.  Four-straight kills by the Panthers gave UNI an 8-7 lead and a kill put them at match-point at 14-12.  The Shockers responded with three-straight points to take a 15-14 advantage, but could not capitalize on match point and UNI took an 18-16 win.

The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Oct. 17 against Bradley at 5 p.m.
