WICHITA, Kan. - The Shockers (14-3, 5-2) turned up the heat on a cold night in Wichita, lighting up the court for a Southern Illinois sweep, 25-20, 25-20, 25-16.
Set one saw back-and-forth scoring action until the Shockers knocked down a pair of kills to take a 19-15 lead. The Salukis pulled within two, but a Sarah McGee kill gave the Shockers a 20-17 cushion. Stockman's ace all but locked down the match for the Shockers as one more Saluki error was all that was needed for the 25-20 Shocker victory.
Seniors Kim Wadsworth and Emily Stockman got the Shockers started in the second set as their kills helped build an early 4-1 lead. Once again Southern Illinois found a way back midway through the set. Knotted at 18-18, WSU took over. A pair of crucial blocks and a Wadsworth kill helped propel the Shocks to a 24-19 lead before a long rally ended the second set in another 25-20 WSU win.
The third and final set belonged solely the Shockers. Setting the pace early, the Shockers jumped out to an 8-4 lead. Forcing a series of Saluki errors combined with a Stockman kill, the Shockers built on their lead, 13-7. A pair of kills from senior Katie Niggemeyer and another from sophomore Mary Elizabeth Hooper put the Shocks out of reach, 17-8. Wadsworth, McGee and Niggemeyer all connected on kills to finish out the set and the match, 25-16.
Stockman led the Shocks with 10 kills while Wadsworth led with a striking .300 hitting percentage. She, Niggemeyer and Amanda Backes each tallied eight kills on Saturday. Senior Melissa Granville led the defensive front with 17 kills.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Oct. 16 at Northern Iowa.
