WICHITA ? Toure' Murry gave Wichita State it's only lead of the game with eight seconds remaining to complete a come-from-behind effort as the Shockers stunned Evansville, 51-50, Sunday afternoon in front of 10,502 fans inside Charles Koch Arena.
Murry paced the Shockers with 15 points, while J.T. Durley added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Evansville Shy Ely led all scorers with 17 points, and was the only Purple Ace to finish in double figures.
WSU trailed 49-42 with 2:44 left to play before making a 9-1 run to end the game. Durley started the run with a free throw, and followed with a lay-up on the next WSU possession. At that point, UE led 49-45. Ten seconds later, Murry hit one of two free throws, and pulled the Shocks within three, 49-46, with 1:30 remaining. A minute later, a dunk by David Kyles brought WSU to within one, 49-48, with 35 seconds yet to play. UE's Shy Ely made things interesting, hitting the second of a two-shot foul to push the UE lead back to two, 50-48, with 33 seconds left but the Shocks didn't panic, moving the ball and running the clock down to eight seconds, when Clevin Hannah found Murry open in the corner for WSU's only lead, and the game-winning shot.
Evansville attempted to shatter Shocker dreams when Kavon Lacey put up a three point shot from the opposite corner, but the ball found the rim unkind and WSU's win was secured.
The Shockers struggled in the first half. Evansville held WSU without a field goal for better than seven minutes while they jetted to an early 13-4 advantage. Hannah converted an Aaron Ellis steal into two points for his squad when he drained a fast-break lay-up, and pulled the Shocks to within seven, 13-6, near the 13 minute mark. WSU was just 4 of 15 from the floor heading into halftime, but the Shocks hit 10 free throws to keep them within striking distance, while the Purple Aces shot the ball at a 42.3 percent clip in the half. Ellis hit a three pointer just before the halftime buzzer to give his team some confidence, but they hit the locker room down 26-19 after 20 minutes of basketball.
WSU shot 12-for-28 (42.9 percent) in the second half, and finished the game with a 16-for-43 effort from the field. The Shockers converted on 17 of 28 attempts from the free throw line, and hit just two three-pointers in the game; one at the end of each half.
Evansville shot 18-for-50 (36 percent) in the game.
The win, WSU's third-straight, boosts the Shockers' record to 9-11 overall, and 3-6 in conference play, while Evansville will hit the bus with a 12-7 overall record, and a 4-4 record in Valley play.
WSU is back in action Wednesday when they travel to Peoria, Ill., to battle the Bradley Braves. Tip-time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the game can be seen locally on KWCH, Channel 12.
