Box Score NORMAN, Okla. ? The Shockers opened the 2008 season with a thrilling
come from behind win over No. 10 Cal Poly in the Sooner Legends Nike
Invitational. WSU won by scores of
16-25, 12-25, 25-19, 25-21 and 15-8.
After falling behind two sets to none, the Shockers
responded by scoring five-straight to end the third set including three kills
by Emily Stockman and a kill and ace by Lindsey Eckenrode.
In the fourth set, the Shockers jumped out to a 7-1 lead,
but Cal Poly stormed back to take a 14-13 lead.
The teams went back and forth until WSU ended the set on a 6-2 run to
win 25-21.
The fifth set was tied at five before the Shockers pulled
away to take a 15-8 win behind the serving of Mary Elizabeth Hooper.
Stockman and Eckenrode led the Shockers with 15 kills each,
while Stockman added 12 digs and Eckenrode added seven digs and three aces. Sarah McGee chipped in with five kills, two
aces and six blocks, while Kelly Broussard had a match-high 24 digs and Mary
Elizabeth Hooper had a team-high 39 assists.
The Mustangs out hit the Shockers .199 to .182 and also
tallied higher numbers in every major statistical category including kills,
digs, aces and blocks, but the Shockers prevailed for the victory. It was the highest-ranked opponent the
Shockers have beaten in school history.
