Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (36-11, 14-4 MVC) was down one with no outs and two on in the bottom of the ninth when Ryan Jones delivered a hit up the middle that brought around the winning run over Northern Iowa (25-18, 11-7 MVC).
The Shockers swept the series with the 6-5 victory. Logan Hoch (1-1), throwing the final 2.1 innings, picked up the win, giving up just one hit.
The Shockers singled in their first run with back-to-back hits by Ryan Jones and Andy Dirks, and an RBI single ripped up the middle from Clint McKeever.
With two outs in the second, UNI used three-consecutive singles by Brett Douglas, Travis Hendrix and Eddie Almonte to tie the game at one apiece.
Cory Ege singled right off the pitcher's foot to lead off the fifth inning. Deric Manrique was hit by a pitch and the runners advanced on a wild pitch. Dane Embury pushed a single through the left side, driving in two runs. Brandon Douglas singled, but was quickly erased with a double play from Chris Lopez. WSU starter Anthony Capra was not out of the woods yet, as the junior left-hander walked Brett Featherston. Reliever Tyler Fleming struggled through three batters, giving out two walks and an RBI single to Travis Hendrix. Fleming's second walk gave Almonte an RBI as it crossed Featherston and gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead.
Wichita State chipped away at the lead with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth. With two down on strikes, the Shockers took advantage of an error by starter Nick Kirk. Josh Workman reached and motored all the way to third on the wild throw. Jones delivered a shot up the middle, plating Workman.
Dusty Coleman legged out an infield single to start the sixth and Clint McKeever drew a walk. The runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, but the Shockers put up two outs on strikes, threatening to strand their teammates. Kenny Willams, Jr., was intentionally walked to lead the bases and the Panthers gave up two runs with a walk and hit batter, giving Tyler Hill and Workman RBI and putting the Shockers within one.
Capra gave up five earned runs in 4.2 innings on eight hits and two walks. Khol Nanney threw a solid two innings, giving up one hit and three strikeouts.
