Box Score EVANSVILLE- Wichita State (37-14, 15-5 MVC) could only muster three hits and three runs against John Foley and the Aces, falling 6-3 to Evansville (13-37, 3-17 MVC).
The Aces never trailed, posting five runs before the Shockers even managed a hit off of Evansville's starter. Andy Smith reached on a booted ball by Conor Gillaspie and advanced to second as Peter Tountas was hit by a pitch. Ryan Fleming hit an RBI single through the right side to plate the first run.
Greg Wallace reached on a fielder's choice in the third and a double by Nate Smith gave the Aces a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the fifth, a costly error by Josh Workman extended the inning and resulted in three runs for Evansville.
Andy Dirks broke through Foley's no-hitter in the top of the sixth, leading off with a double scorched off the center field wall. The senior took third on a wild pitch and runners were at the corners with a walk to Ryan Jones. Singles by Gillaspie and Clint McKeever crossed two and Workman cut the lead to 5-3 with a sacrifice fly, driving in Gillaspie.
Evansville added insurance with a run in the eighth, and held the score to 6-3 as the Shockers went down in order in the last three innings.
All of the Shockers' runs were earned and Foley improved to 5-4 with the win, walking three and striking out six.
WSU starter Aaron Shafer (8-3) threw 7.1 innings and allowed nine Evansville hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Only two of the six runs were earned, but the junior righty shouldered the loss. Logan Hoch finished the remaining 0.2 innings, giving up one hit and no runs.
The deciding game of the series will be played Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Evansville, Ind.
