Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State fell to 33-10 on the season as Kansas State (21-23) edged the Shockers, 3-2, in Wichita Tuesday night.
The Shockers were the first on the board in what was a see-saw game. Conor Gillaspie doubled in Ryan Jones who had drawn a one out walk.
However, their lead was short lived. Kansas State tied the game up in the top of the second on three consecutive singles by Jason King, Adam Muenster, and Byron Wiley.
The Shockers added another run in the second after a two-out single by Taylor Brown in the middle of no man's land in shallow right field. Brown stole second, getting in scoring position for an Andy Dirks RBI single up the middle.
Kansas State struck right back in the top of the third. After a Jordan Cruz single and Brett Scott hit-by-pitch, Justin Bloxom doubled down the right field line scoring Cruz. K-State runners got doubled up on third as Bloxom tried to stretch his hit into a triple. Scott was forced home and thrown out on the play.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, back-to-back singles from Bloxom and King put two aboard. A wild pitch by reliever Khol Nanney advanced the runners and an error by Dusty Coleman extended the inning and allowed Bloxom to score.
Wichita State threatened in the late innings, but never managed to plate a run. Gillaspie drew a walk on four-straight balls in the eighth and Coleman took Daniel Edwards' first pitch to center field for a single. Edwards turned around and got consecutive strikeouts from Clint McKeever and Kenny Williams, Jr., to end the inning unscathed. Tyler Weber worked a full count for a walk to lead off the ninth, and Tyler Hill laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the tying run to second in the form of pinch runner Cody Lassley. The rest of the inning fell in place like the eighth with a pair of strikeouts ending the Shockers' last chance.
Nanney gave up the go-ahead run and shouldered the loss, falling to 4-1 on the season. The unearned run was the only one tagged to the senior who allowed two hits and struck out three in three innings. Starter Tyler Fleming gave up two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work. Matt Smith held off the Wildcats for a scoreless two innings and faced the minimum with two strikeouts.
WSU takes to the road to face Big XII opponent Oklahoma in Norman Okla., Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The game telecast on Kansas Now 22 with Shane Dennis and Bruce Haertl calling the action.
