Box Score TERRE HAUTE- Wichita State (33-8, 11-3 MVC) concluded last night's game with a 14-7 win before topping Indiana State (12-26, 5-9 MVC), 11-2, in the regularly scheduled Saturday game.
The Sycamores again scored early with two runs in the first, but that is all ISU would manage for nine innings. Gary King singled to lead off the half and Chris Schmidt gave Indiana State the lead with a two-run homerun to left field.
Clint McKeever drove in a run for WSU in the second with a single. Dusty Coleman scored on the play after getting on board with a double to right field.
Wichita State used a six-run fourth to take the lead and put a gap in the score. McKeever sparked the inning with a solo home run to knot it at 2-2. Kevin Hall reached on an error by third baseman Brian Ramirez and Cody Lassley bunted for a single off the first pitch from starter Matt Shelton. Kyle Sisney squeezed one into play down the right field line for a triple and two RBI. Andy Dirks took his first pitch out of the yard for a two-run homerun to right field, his eighth of the year and Conor Gillaspie hit his third homerun of the series, a solo shot that extended the score to 7-2.
The Shockers added three more in the sixth with two outs. Dirks doubled into the right-center gap and Ryan Jones drew a four-ball walk. Gillaspie extended the inning by reaching on a fielding error by left fielder King, as both base runners scored unearned runs. Coleman drove his first pitch to right field, crossing Gillaspie.
Jones plated Dirks in the eighth to give the Shockers the final 11-2 score. Dirks was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Bronco Lafrenz.
Starter Aaron Shafer allowed two earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out six in eight innings. Justin Kemp closed the ninth, sitting down three-straight batters.
The final game of the series begins Sunday at 12 p.m. CST.
