Shocks Fall to SIU, 3-0

4/19/2008 5:00:00 PM

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan.- Aaron Shafer had a career-high 12 strikeouts, but Southern Illinois (20-16, 4-7) was able to piece together three hits to top the Shockers, 3-0.

Shafer fell to 6-2 as Wichita State dropped to 29-7 and 8-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference.  Both pitchers threw a complete game with Shafer allowing three earned runs on five hits and one walk.  SIU's Shawn Joy gave up five hits and walked no one while striking out five.

Hits were few and far between through the first six innings as both pitchers used the entire plate to keep the hitters guessing.  The Shockers had four hits during the stretch, two from Andy Dirks, and the only other base runners were via fielder choices and a hit by pitch.

Southern Illinois had two hits during the drought and a third base runner due to a catcher's interference.  Shafer struck out the side in the second inning and continued into the third with two more to total five-straight strikeouts.

Adam Hills drew a 3-1 walk and Mark Kelly reached on a fielder's choice.  Conor Gillaspie's throw to second was not in time and all runners were safe on the play.  Three consecutive singles by Bret Maugeri, Tyler Bullock and Dean Cademartori each scored a run to give the Salukis the 3-0 lead that held through the ninth.

The series will be decided Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
