Box Score LINCOLN, Neb.- No. 5 Wichita State was shut out by No. 9 Nebraska, 3-0, Tuesday night in Lincoln, Neb.
Tim Kelley and Logan Hoch held Nebraska to six scoreless innings, but it was two early Cornhusker runs in the first and an unearned run in the eighth that topped the Shockers.
Kelley got his first batter on a fly ball, but four consecutive singles plated two runs and gave Nebraska the 2-0 lead after one complete inning.
Kelley and the WSU defense forced nine-straight outs after that, speeding through to the fourth inning. Craig Corriston broke the drought with a single.
The same thing was happening on the other side, however, as the Shockers managed only four hits on the night off of Erik Bird and Zach Herr.
Logan Hoch was in command to start the sixth and picked up where Kelley left off, picking up eight consecutive outs before Nebraska manufactured a run in the eighth. Jake Mort was hit by a pitch and motored to second on a stolen base. Second baseman Taylor Brown booted a groundball to extend the inning and allow Mort to score.
Kelley was tagged with the loss and fell to 4-2. Bird improved to 2-1 and Herr picked up his second win of the season.
Dusty Coleman went 2-for-4. Kyle Sisney and Kenny Williams, Jr., had the only other Shocker hits.
Wichita State hosts Tabor on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Eck Stadium before a home conference series with Southern Illinois begins on Friday night.
