Wichita, Kan.- Wichita State defeated Harvard in game one of a doubleheader, 16-3, before rallying in the tenth inning to win, 11-10, in game two.

Game 1 - Wichita State 16, Harvard 3

Rob Musgrave tied his career high of 13 strikeouts and the Shocker offense had a blistering 16 runs on 16 hits in the Shockers' 16-3 win over Harvard (0-1).

WSU (5-3) took advantage of Harvard's first inning pitching struggles. The Crimson's Eric Eadington walked three of the game's first seven batters. Andy Dirks scored on Dusty Coleman's bases-loaded walk to open the scoring. A sacrifice fly by Tyler Weber allowed Ryan Jones to score from third, before Connor Gillaspie rounded out the inning by scoring thanks to an errant throw by Harvard catcher Matt Kramer. When the dust settled, the Shocks held a 3-0 advantage after one complete inning.

After two scoreless innings, Harvard rallied in its half of the fourth. The Crimson put two runners on base, before Harry Douglas sent a Musgrave pitch over the centerfield wall, tying the game at 3-3.

The Shockers wasted no time answering back, pounding out four hits on their way to a three-run inning. Tyler Hill opened the inning with a single to the right side. Kenny Williams, Jr., followed with a single to right field. Hill scored on a Dirks ground out, and Williams crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jones. After singling to right, Gillaspie scored on a Coleman double to right field, giving WSU a 6-3 lead heading to the fifth inning.

WSU added three more runs in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead into the seventh, where they tagged Harvard relievers Max Warren and Anthony Nutter for seven more runs behind seven hits and two walks. Cody Lassley opened the inning with a triple to left, and scored on a Hill single to left. After singling to right, Williams, Jr. scored on a Dirks single. Jones scored on a Coleman single to centerfield, before Jones, Coleman and Gillaspie scored on a Weber bomb to left-center that gave the Shockers the 16-3 count they would win by.

Head coach Gene Stephenson emptied the bench through the remaining two innings, as 18 players saw action in the win.
Musgrave (1-0) went seven innings on the mound, giving up just three runs on seven hits in seven innings of walk-less work on the way to his first win of the season.  Justin Kemp finished the game for the Shockers, allowing just one hit while walking two and fanning four.

Game 2 - Wichita State 11, Harvard 10

Aaron Shafer threw six perfect innings before Harvard (0-2) mounted a late game rally, as Wichita State (6-3) needed an extra frame to down Harvard 11-10 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Crimson notched their first hit of the game in the top of the seventh when Matt Rogers sent a Shafer pitch to shallow left field, but the Shockers retired the rest of the side in order, maintaining their 5-0 lead.

Harvard stormed back in the eighth, pounding out six consecutive hits which scored three runs and left the bases juiced. Harry Douglas belted a Womack pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam that gave the Crimson a 7-5 lead. Harvard scored on a Taylor Meehan single that allowed Tom Stack-Babich to score from second, and gave the Crimson an 8-5 advantage going into the bottom of the eighth.

The Crimson added two more runs in the top of the ninth. Jeff Stoeckel got a lead-off single and advanced to second on a balk.  Matt Vance ripped one up the middle and stole second, putting two runners in scoring position. Matt Rogers took another into center field for a two RBI single. Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Shockers trailed 10-5.

Wichita State rallied in its half of the ninth. Williams, Jr. led off with a single to left field before Dirks was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Williams and Dirks scored on a Coleman double to left center, and brought the Shockers to within three at 10-7. After reaching base on an error, Gillaspie and Coleman, who doubled to left center, scored on a Josh Workman fly to center to draw within one at 10-9.

Workman tied the game at 10-10 on a Tyler Hill double down the left-field line. Kyle Sisney sent a pitch to right field, but it wasn't far enough as Harvard left fielder Matt Rogers caught it to send the game to extra innings.

Wichita State claimed the game in the 10th. With the bases loaded and no outs, Adam Cole threw a wild pitch that allowed Williams, who walked to start the inning, to score from third.

Tyler Fleming (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, finishing up the last three innings for the Shockers on the mound.
