WICHITA -- Wichita State (9-21, 3-15) honored its seniors prior to the final regular-season game, but it was Drake senior Jill Martin who stole the show as the Valley scoring leader poured in 27 in helping the Bulldogs (20-9, 13-5) turn back the Shockers, 53-51, Saturday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.
Martin led all players in scoring, while Lindsay Whorton chipped in 11. The Shockers were led by
Kiki Stephens, who finished her final home game as a Shocker with 10 points. Senior
Kyrie Kinder and junior
Daria Frazier each grabbed five rebounds to lead WSU while Martin and Jill Agee snagged seven boards a piece to lead Drake.
Both teams started hot, as the Shockers made their first three shots and managed to shoot 50-percent from the field in the opening minutes.
Neither team was able to break out to a substantial lead early until Drake used a 11-0 run from Jill Martin and Jordann Plummer to race out to a 23-15 lead with 3:58 left in the opening frame.
The Shockers answered with a 9-2 run of their own, capped by a
Taylor Steven 3-pointer with :27 seconds left, but Martin scored her 22nd point of the afternoon on a jumper as time expired, allowing Drake to go to the locker with a 27-24 lead.
WSU shot 42-percent from the floor in the first half, while Drake shot 44-percent including a 50-percent clip from 3-point range.
The Shockers scored the first five points of the second to claim a 29-27 lead, but Drake answered with a pair of buckets from Lindsay Whorton to tie the game at 31-31, with 16:38 left. Eight-straight points in the paint allowed the Shockers to build its largest lead of the game to that point, 39-31, following
Jacie Hoyt's layin with 12:36 left,
The lead would build to as many as eight, but Drake responded with a 6-0 run to close to within 41-38 after a Dybing jumper with 9:49 left. The teams then traded points until a Whorton 3-pointer with three minutes left cut the Shocker lead to just one, 48-47, as WSU managed just two points over six-minute span late in the second.
Another Whorton 3-pointer tied the game at 50-50 with 2:10 left, and a Martin layin with 1:38 gave Drake a 52-51 lead, its first since early in the second half. A Whorton 3-pointer with :16 seconds left landed long but Lauren Dybing came up with the offensive board sealing the Shockers' fate.
Martin connected on one of two free throws and Stephens' jumper landed just short, but the ball went out of bounds on the rebound and Kinder's jumper as time expired landed just short, as WSU dropped its fifth-straight to close the regular season.
WSU is next in action in the opening round of the State Farm MVC Tournament, playing at 8:35 p.m., next Thursday against an opponent to be determined.
