Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Despite a final charge from Binghamton in the ninth inning, Wichita State (16-3) held on for a 13-8 victory over the Bearcats (5-13).
Tonight Binghamton took the early lead, scoring a run right away in the top of the first inning. Ryan James beat out an infield hit and Peter Bregartner bounced a single through the right side. A ground out by Joe Charron moved the runners over and Kyle Klee brought in the run with a single dropped in front of the center fielder.
Wichita State answered in the bottom half of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Andy Dirks led off with a single to the left-center gap. Conor Gillaspie drew a walk and Dusty Coleman brought in a run with a single to right field. Clint McKeever plated two more with a single ripped up the middle.
The Bearcats managed a run in the third after a single and stolen base by Bregartner. The runner scored as a wild throw by shortstop Coleman sailed into the third base dugout.
The Shockers used a four-run third to distance themselves from the Bearcats. Gillaspie reached on an error by shortstop Kyle Klee and Coleman was on board with a walk. Gillaspie came home on a single by Josh Workman and McKeever doubled in Coleman. A balk by Binghamton starter James Giulietti crossed Workman and left McKeever at third. Kenny Williams, Jr., hit a double past a diving center fielder, driving in McKeever.
Ryan Jones led off with a walk in the fourth and rounded on a hit by Gillaspie and scored on an error by the left fielder.
Workman doubled to start the fifth and advanced to home with groundouts by McKeever and Lassley. Williams singled up the middle and was brought home by a Jones hit, giving Wichita State a 10-2 lead.
Tyler Weber was hit by a pitch, advanced on a Workman single and scored on an error by the third baseman to extend the lead in the sixth.
Binghamton scratched out two runs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 11-4. Jeff Abrams hit a lead off single and C.J. Lukaszewski followed with a walk. A Ryan James single and fielder's choice by Bregartner would cross the first run and Lukaszewski came home on a sacrifice fly from Ken Jacobi.
The Shockers got those run back in the bottom half of the inning as three consecutive hits, which included a triple by Jones, plated two.
The Bearcats gave closer Dusty Coleman trouble in the top of the ninth. James singled to lead off the frame, but Coleman was able to get the next batters for two outs. A Klee single through the right side brought in James and a walk to Corey Taylor put two on. Ryan Holley hit a homerun to score three before Coleman could get Tom Baileys to line out to right field, ending the game.
Clint Maune picked up his first win, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out five in four innings.
The Shockers start a four-game home series with North Dakota State Friday, March 26, at 7 p.m. The doubleheader Saturday will begin at 2 p.m. and consist of two seven-inning games. The series wraps up Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
