Baseball Beats Emporia State, 6-3

Tim Kelley made his Shocker debut and earned the win in the predetermined split. The redshirt freshman allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk, while striking out five in four innings.

Clint McKeever faced six batters and allowed two runs on three hits.  Tyler Fleming threw 2.1 scoreless innings and Andy Womack shut out the final two to earn the save.

Emporia State's Keith Hernandez hit a two-out homerun in the top of the first, but the Shockers answered quickly with the same from Josh Workman in the bottom half of the frame.

Wichita State took the lead in the second after a lead-off hit from Weber.  Tyler Hill drew a walk then the Shockers managed three consecutive singles with Lassley and Kevin Hall driving in runs. 

Coleman doubled in Conor Gillaspie, who had reached on a walk in the third, taking a 4-1 lead.

McKeever got the first two batters in the fifth, but two singles, an error and a walk later, two runs had scored and the redshirt sophomore was replaced by Fleming on the mound. The Hornets had cut the advantage to one, 4-3.

Coleman picked up his second double of the day and stole third to start the sixth inning.  WSU added an insurance run as Hill hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Coleman to cross home.

Gillaspie had an RBI single in the seventh after Ryan Jones drew a walk, making it 6-3.

Fleming and Womack pieced together 4.1 scoreless innings and a combined five strikeouts to hold the Hornets at bay.

Tyler Weber, Dusty Coleman and Cody Lassley all ended with a 2-for-4 effort.  Weber and Coleman each scored a run, while Coleman and Lassley both had an RBI.

The Shockers travel to Long Beach, Calif., for a three-game series that begins Friday afternoon at 8:30 p.m. CST.
